Last year's topic: TMP link

Alright, then.

Miserable year for the starter projects for me.

Project Status:
1. WFB Dogs of War:1,500 pts plus options.
NOT COMPLETED (90%+ primered, 50% or so "painted")

2. WAB OG Rus: 1,000 pts.
NOT COMPLETED (goal is primered, only about half with any paint)

3. FoW North Africa Brits "super-company".
NOT COMPLETED (primered a few things)

4. A platoon of Her Majesty's Star Marine Scouts.
NOT COMPLETED (one squad on the table)

5. Two 500 pt Rezolution crews.
NOT COMPLETED (387 and 0)

6. Two 500 pt Dark Age bands.
ONE DONE (next closest was only at 60 pts)

7. Two 500 pt Warmachine/Hordes battlegroups.
NOT COMPLETED (closest were 348 and 200)

8. Finish (Brigade) AmRep Fleet
NOT COMPLETED (6 of 19)

9. Terrain for all of the above; at least a signature piece or two.
THREE COMPLETED OUT OF EIGHT

10. Rescue the other rooms in the house from the "lead creep".
NOPE. Progress, yes. Could someone ELSE tell? No.

Well then.

Being the persistent sod I am, none of these are dropping off the list. Being a foo with too much stuff not being played with, I'm going to add more.

Some renumbering is in order…

Project List 2008:
1. WFB Dogs of War:1,500 pts plus options.
2 WFB: two other armies to "minimum forcelist" (2 core, 1 other, 1 character)
3. WAB OG Rus: 1,000 pts.
4. FoW North Africa Brits "super-company".
5. A (possibly "short") platoon of Her Majesty's Star Marine Scouts with transport.
6. Two 500 pt Rezolution crews.
7. One 500 pt Dark Age band.
8. Two 500 pt Warmachine/Hordes battlegroups.
9. All Classic Battletech in the collection (which isn't much, but hey)
10. Finish (Brigade) AmRep Fleet
11. Terrain for 1-5 & 9; at least a signature piece or two.
12. Rescue the other rooms in the house from the "lead creep".

I had a lot of goals hobby-wise but didn't make nearly as much progress as I wanted to. Mostly I waffled around on my current projects and added a bunch of other stuff to the list as well. My two main goals were to:

1. Finish WHFB Skaven to 3000 points. I stalled out around 2350 points, although I've purchased enough extra stuff to go beyond 3000 points now.

2. Purchase and paint 3000 points for WHFB Orcs and Goblins. I've got probably 40% of the figures purchased, but have only partially painted 8 Orcs.

Although I came up dreadfully short on those goals, I have made minor progress on some other projects. I've got a small start on a Space Marine army, a nearly finished Moria Goblins warband, did a little work on some pirates and civilians, and painted up some Reaper stuff. For 2008 I have a few goals:

1. Paint up all my Skaven.

2. Make significant progress on the Orcs & Goblins (hopefully paint at least 2000 points).

3. Paint the 30-odd Space Marines I have lying about.

4. Paint up the two Mordheim warbands I picked up this month (Sisters of Sigmar and Witch Hunters).

5. Get a start on some Warhammer Ancient Battles armies, probably using some of Foundry's army deals. (This will probably be mostly a research and list-building project for 2008, as it will probably take me most of the year to save up for the figures).

6. Finish the Reaper Warlord warbands I planned out a while back. I have 70% of the figures for several of them, but only a few figures painted.

7. Build up several 500-point forces from Games Workshop's Lord of the Rings line for a map-based campaign game.

All of that is probably way more than I can actually handle but I'd be pretty excited to finish the Skaven, Orcs & Goblins, Mordheim stuff, and a couple of 500-point Lord of the Rings forces. I'd really be happy if I could eliminate most of my lead pile and be able to have two or three entirely new projects to start for 2009.

Stuart31 Dec 2007 11:57 p.m. PST

Although I did not achieve any real goals I feel 2007 was a good year. I gamed more than I have for a long time, despite somewhat smaller numbers than previous years my painting was more vairied and I finished strongly.

My goals for 2008 is to give the unpainted lead heap a good kicking and actually finish some units and to complete at least two of the gaming projects I have started.

Pictors Studio31 Dec 2007 11:59 p.m. PST

Looking at my list I got almost none of those things done except the Chinese.

I did start a bunch of different projects though, including 15mm eastern renaissance, instead of the 28mm listed there.

So my projects for this year will be:

15mm Turkish army, which is started, 32 tartars finished for it so far.

10mm Ogre Kingdoms army. This is already started as well. I have another couple of ogre units to finish, including one more Iron Guts unit, plus command stands for all the existing units, which will end up turning those units into more units. As there are three stand units now, adding command stands will just made more units.

But when the plastics are released I will be getting Romans from Tony and ACW cav from the Perry's. I also want to build up some British Legion for the Carlist wars when that comes out.

Pijlie01 Jan 2008 1:18 a.m. PST

A medium year for me, I´d say:

WAB 28mm Carthaginians are finished for about 3500 points.

Playing Jutland had to wait for that.

Determined to finally build the Peking Legacy for all those marvellous 20mm figures, but got sidetracked by Age of Arthur. Jutland still waiting…

Determined to build an Arthurian army and a lot of terrain. Built Roman Villa,, a Dark age fortress, Hadrian wall ruin, Badon Hill and painted all Arthurians save some 20 foot and some 20 horse still to do. Jutland of course, had to wait some months.

Nearly got sidetracked by those confounded 20mm samurai again, bought Ikko-Ikki and sohei and managed to add those to the hundreds of samurai and ashigaru already gathering dust. Next to the Jutland ships. On with the Arthurians!

Then got sidetracked by Flashman´s lady and The Kris and the flame. Bought sailors, marines and detemined to build prahus and jungle fortress. Bought two Airfix jungle outposts and painted some marines.

Then got sidetracked by Siege and Conquest…

Determined to build siege engines and medieval village. Have built one of two siege towers so far, some ballistae and started on a 10 house medieval village. So far so good, but on Old Year´s Eve I casually sorted out those EIR I bought cheap in spring and casually made an army list….

Fortunately I haven´t had the money to buy the Hochseeflotte yet. Phew!

Perhaps I should stop measuring my progress in terms of "annual". Decades sounds a lot better!

Frothers Did It Anyway01 Jan 2008 3:03 a.m. PST

I was mainly on a terrain trip in 2007 – I built a LOT of NWF hills, buildings, boards etc and lots of 15mm Stalingrad terrain plus various odds and ends for DBA (nice little Roman Villa camp I'm quite proud of.

2008 – As all my Eastern Front WW2 is in winter gear and has urban themed bases I'll be doing summer/rural forces for both Huns and Russkies. As I play Crossfire this shouldn't take too long or cost much. Hoorah! Then there'll be terrain to match. As I play Crossfire this might take ages. Boo!

After that I'll probably be expanding DBA Late Romans into a "proper" army, possibly using Armati, not yet decided on rules. I may also become a Copplestone fanboy with a Darkest Africa or RCW skirmish project (THW rules I expect).

C'est tout pour moi. I learned long ago that lining up loads of huge projects like GypsyComet can only lead to disappointment. grin

Matakishi01 Jan 2008 3:21 a.m. PST

Not a great year but a reasonably good one.

Home Guard for Crossfire DONE. Added extras too. No buildings made though.

imrael01 Jan 2008 4:04 a.m. PST

Well, the MAcedonian army I got from last year's Christmas sale finally emerged painted in October – thats actually fairly fast by my standards.

I also managed to dispose of a WFB army (Bretonnians) and some incidental stuff, and paint more than I bought for the first time ever.

For next year I have a WAB barbarian horde to finish, plus some 20mm Napoleonics. Again, I aim to finish the year with less than I started, although that trend will have gone far enough by then.

Mick in Switzerland01 Jan 2008 4:41 a.m. PST

2007 was quite successful.

ww2 Camouflage Guides project was published on Christmas Eve.
link
I will do more work on this in 2008.

In 2007, I painted about 200 WW2 figures and 150 medievals and dark ages. I want to do more WW2 (British, standard Germans) in 2008 and also finish a project based on Kingmakers Hussites. Also on the cards is a generic Arab army (circa 60 figures) to use as Moors and Crusades.

Regards Mick

Fat Wally01 Jan 2008 5:27 a.m. PST

2007 was a good year. One major project sorted as initially I cleared my backlog of unpainted 15mm Napoleonics and two new periods added.

1) I completed my 1809 Napoleonic Austrians by adding a further six Battalions in helmets.

2) I completed my 1812-13 Napoleonic French-Saxon Corps.

3) I completed my French Heavy Cavalry Division of four Cuirassier and two Carabinier Regiments.

All in all 596 figures painted by May 2007. My wife returned to work in Spring after maternity leave with myself as my daughter's primary carer. This drastically reduced the amount of time I had to paint.

However, June 2007 saw me purchase the 1/144th pre-painted Wings of War Miniatures and playing TFL 'Algy'. I added a few Skytrex planes to the collection and by September it had risen to 12 German and 16 RFC.

August – December saw our gaming group progressing from 'Algy' to 'Bag The Hun' WW2 Aerial. Bought and painted 89 1/600th Tumbling Dice Miniatures Luftwaffe and 60 RAF planes.

Next year we have another addition on the way (a boy!) in March so gaming will be pretty much on hold until summer, I guess. I'm planning on expanding my WW2 planes by adding Japanese and Soviet as we use BTH to play Pacific and Eastern Front theatres.

Cosmic Reset01 Jan 2008 6:41 a.m. PST

I made a lot of progress in '07

ahh yes good intentions………………..

HistoriFigs01 Jan 2008 6:59 a.m. PST

As far as '07 is concerned, lets not say too much – it was not a good year. About the only forces that reached a 'completed' status are my 30mm FFL & Arabs (and they are not really complete, but I can now game with what I have done). Too many projects are left sitting on the painting desk…

For '08, I am going to try and keep it simple. So, here is my list:

1) Add one more 66 figure battalion to my SYW Russian army.
2) Add one 50 – 60 figure cavalry unit to SYW Russian army
3) Add a wee bit of artillery to SYW Russians

4) Finish the Medieval project started last year – at least enough figures so I can start teaching Liam how to play

5) Start my WWI project (15mm, mostly Bloodaxe figures)

6) Start my US in the Philippines project (again 15mm with 'new' Bloodaxe figures).

7) This is a multi-year project; replace my 30mm AWI armies with 40mm armies (like the 30mm armies, these will be mostly our figures – the new 40mm line).

Seven projects is more than enough, so I'll call it a good year if I can complete even 3 of the above projects.

Thats about it for my personal projects, there are a dozen or more HistoriFigs projects on the books already, with more forming…

bruntonboy01 Jan 2008 7:11 a.m. PST

Easy….in 2008 I will finish off those projects that didn't et done in 2007.

That is after I finish those things from the last 15 years or so that are still on the backlist….

Oh, and promise to be realistic with my plans in future!

Actually I d have a sort of plan. Simply not to buy anymore figures until I finish something else, so if I want the new 28mm project at Sheffield in march than I had best get cracking on the Byzantines started in 2007.

Rant over.

Building dry planet & futuristic city terrain boards for Shockforce/SST/SST Evolution/retro 40K-RT/retro Warzone

I got the dry planet half of that done:
link

Expanding my collection of Crescent Root bildings and painting up a desert village/fort/marketplace for 25mm Pulp

The village is painted. The marketplace still needs to be done.

Paint up existing Pulp figures.
Painting up F&IW in 25mm

I've failed here.
Painting up my totally unpainted 15mm Sci-fi collection.
Painting more 28mm Sci-fi

Some success. I've got 4 companies worth of 15mm Sci-fi infantry done. I've painted a bunch of 28mm Starship Troopers figures and a few others. I also added a Warmachine Cryx faction that I had painted and have since started adding my own painted figures.

Expanding 28mm WWII skirmish collection, hopefully with upcoming VFM British and Russians.

I get a pass on these. VFM came out with more Sci-fi stuff this past year. I'm eagerly waiting for Russians in 2008.

Basing 25mm Normans and Saxons, getting Vikings and civilians painted.

My Saxon army is based. The rest remains..undone.

Cold Wars Flea Market purge of my really really unused and unwanted figures and kits.
Catalog my figures by genre/manufacturer/product code. Ha Ha..

I sold some stuff. Not everything I want to get rid of. I purchased more than I sold. And I only have the beginnings of an accounting of my collection.

Overall I think I got a lot of hobby stuff done. In my "real life(tm)" I also built a garden shed, installed a paver walkway, totally renovated a dining room, and did a bunch of other important stuff this year.

Goldwyrm01 Jan 2008 7:38 a.m. PST

I conveniently forgot to add my 2008 Goals, so here they are:

1)Finish a 1/72 Akuyaku tank kit I started a few weeks ago.
2)Paint up more Warmachine Cryx
3)Finish up my Starship Troopers Marauders, Exosuits, Skinnies, and Arachnids
4)Finish my miscellanaous sci-fi: Spugs, Hydrissians, Mephalians, Drantakhs, and various human figures
4b)Finish Bronze Age Wasteland Mutants
5)Build a city board for GoMC:1/SST/generic skirmish
6)Put together a World War Z scenario game
7)Finish my existing WWII figures
8)Add some WWII VFM Russians if they are released
9)Do something with my 25mm Dark Ages stuff
10)Sell or start using my 15mm ECW
11)Get started on the 25mm F&IW figures
12)Continue my 3.0 D&D campaign
13)Help with a local one day con idea.
14) Make it to at least 5 gaming conventions (Dreamation, Dexcon, Cold Wars, Historicon, and GenCon)
15)Revisit my WWII rules that I started and never finished.

FusilierDan Supporting Member of TMP01 Jan 2008 8:39 a.m. PST

For me to join this discussion I would first have to catalouge all the different projects I have started and inventory figures and terrain. I don't think I've ever completly finished any project. However here's a shot at it.

Build a terrain board of a convent for Gloire. And paint some Nuns.

Paint city buildings I bought for a Gangster game Finish the dozen figures I've started for this.

Complete the troops need for both sides of a Freemans Farm scenario.

Build a small pirate ship and finish the 20 figures for that project.

Now I'm off to work out the details

Dan

jimbeau01 Jan 2008 8:54 a.m. PST

Two goals for 2008 (well, actually for my 40th year, but hey… who' counting)

1) Finish the two games in "design mode"

2) Play 20 gigs with my wife

jim

(Oh yeah, there was something about drinking 1000 guinness but I don't think I am going to make that one)

jeffrsonk01 Jan 2008 10:08 a.m. PST

I didn't post in last year's thread. Somewhere on TMP, though, I mused about how it'd be great if I could do something like this:

1) Finish my 2500 point Viking WAB army by midyear. This was technically done, as I was able to field 2500 points of Vikings for the WAB tourney at KublaCon at the end of May. What I really meant, though, was to have finished painting ALL my Vikings by then. This I did not do, partially because I bought more to fill in some gaps, and partially because I had well over 3000 points of figures to begin with.

2) Pick up one of my smaller incomplete armies (possibly BFG Necrons) and polish that off by New Years. That didn't happen, as I got sidetracked by numerous other tiny projects:

* Painting the Old Glory pirates and cowboys of the month;
* Painting up a mess of peasants for my Vikings to raid;
* Painting a handful of Wargods of Aegyptus Basti.

These other projects did meet my goal of "painting something other than Vikings," but didn't really complete anything. Rather, it added to my pile of partially completed projects! Most importantly, it was all quite fun.

I'm not really a "New Year's Resolution" sort of guy, as I think that setting unreasonable goals is just a good way of making yourself feel bad when you fail. I would be happy if I could say the following on January 1, 2009:

1) I finished a well-painted, efficiently based and transportable Carolingian Army for WAB of about 2000 points.

2) I finished magnetizing the bases for my Vikings, for easier play, even possibly rebasing a few dozen of them onto 40x40s in groups of four.

3) Sold a few dozen unpainted 28mm figures that I know I'll never get around to painting.

4) Dabbled a little bit in collecting and painting Republican Romans, some form of 18th-century skirmish, or both.

5) Actually played one miniatures game a month, on average!

The G Dog Fezian01 Jan 2008 10:43 a.m. PST

2007 – a good year.

The good…
Finished the ACW naval rules.
Drafted a new campaign game.
Wrote a workbench article for TMP.
Attended Cold Wars, Origins and Fall in

The bad…
Bought way more Starship Troopers stuff than I need
Made no progress on the 28mm buildings I bought at Origins
Bought twice as many ACW naval ships as I was able to paint.

The ugly…
Did not paint nearly enough to finish any project

For 2008
Empty the 1/600 shipyard and finish all the pending ship models (why do so many of them need scratchbuilt masts!)

Build and paint the horde of Starship Troopers models sitting on the table.

Attend at least two good game convetions!

Barenakedleadies01 Jan 2008 11:21 a.m. PST

2007 was a not a good year for "projects". Took my truck ice skating on black ice then switched jobs and never really got on track with painting.

I guess I'll move last years projects to 2008!

750+ figure Demonworld/Blood Dawn 15mm goblin army. Finished only about 60 of them last year.

10mm Bavarian Nappies-paint the entire army using OG 60 fig battalions.

Zagloba01 Jan 2008 12:10 p.m. PST

Held over from previous years:

28mm Dark Age skirmish for Pig Wars: All combatants painted, but a few need shields spears and basing. I have some civilians left, but those aren't really a priority.

15mm SYW: I have enough to play games, and am close to finishing all the Prussians I have bought. Russians still need a lot of infantry done, but what Russian army doesn't. Small Austrian detachment started.

28mm Italian Wars: Irregular progress- I have enough to field a side of Italians of about 12 units. Just started the Landsknects.

28mm Sudan: Painted some units, but still need to buy lots of Mahdists.

Started in 2007:

Warmaster Ancients: 1000 pt EIR and 1000 pt Dacian. EIR are about 1/2 done. Dacians not started. I want to expand this to at least 2000 pts each in 2008.

28mm GNW: Just started in November- 2 units bought, 1 primered.

For 2008:

Finish all of the above, plus

28mm Old West: Organize the random figures I have acquired into a couple of 'Warbands' for LotOW.

28mm Arthurians: Fill out the random Arturians and Saxons I have into 2 sides for Glutter of Ravens.

28mm Rogue Trader: Put together some old-school RT armies using GW plastics only, + lots of conversions. Armies are to be for the post-apocalyptic 'Miners vs Pirates' types of things we used to do back in the Earlies.

28mm Fantasy: Fill out the LotR figures I have into 2 armies for 'Waken the Storm.'

28mm Ancients: When the plastic Romans and Gauls come out, buy and paint lots, organized for WAB or Field of Glory when it comes out.

Plus whatever else captures my fancy…

Rich

GreenMountainBoy01 Jan 2008 3:18 p.m. PST

2007 was a good year for GreenMountainBoy. Setting goals, and staying somewhat focused really helped. My goals were also tied up in 'the pledge', as I wanted to paint more miniatures than I purchased, and was successful in that endeavour…. For the year, I managed 330 painted, with 265 purchased-- A real banner year for me.

Lessee, my goals for '07 were:

1) Complete my Flames of War Soviet army.
2) paint 1500 points of Chaos Beastmen
3) Wrap up my Arabs for crusader-era wargaming.

My game group really got into Flames of War this last year, and I spent the first half of the year painting those soviets… There's alwasy more to add, but I consider my efforts successful.

I got a few beastmen done, but can only table a force of about 1000 point, so that needs more work. I have no opponents, however, so the priority of this project is low.

As for the Aarabs, well, that's where I fell down. I didn't get done.

However, on a more positive note, a friend got into 40K, and I managed to 'speed paint' 1000 points of Space Marines in September! Also, I found someone to play LOTR with locally, and wrapped up a bunch of those figures between November and December.

On my agenda for 08:

1) The NUMBER ONE goal is to paint up my smallish 15mm Napoleonics- Both French and Austrians… This is going to take some serious focus.

2) Paint up some of my larger models-- A LOTR Mumak, A GW giant, my Grand Manner 'fortlet'

3) Create a Stalingrad terrain table for Flames of War.

4) Explore one more ancients era-- Early or late saxons, or Rome vs. Carthage, for FIW… Not sure yet…

All the best,
GBM

Wargamer Blue01 Jan 2008 3:25 p.m. PST

I bought 323 miniatures in 28mm and 15mm. I only painted 168 of them.

alien BLOODY HELL surfer01 Jan 2008 4:00 p.m. PST

Paint some figues, play some games. Same projects as every year, same results – IE almost zero :-(

Kampfgruppe Cottrell02 Jan 2008 6:59 a.m. PST

I intend to paint al least 1 miniature a day so by the end of the year I should almost have everything I have done.

Build and paint at least 1 vehicle a week so all my projects will be finished by the end of the year.

Start casting for my company (What The?! Miniatures)

That should just about do me for the hobby this year.

Brian

TodCreasey02 Jan 2008 7:22 a.m. PST

My 2007 goals were to focus on fewer periods and finish up some unfinished projects and generally that went well.

1) Sold all 15mm figures except for Central Asian biblicals and ancients so that I can still play with my buddies. I even sold off my figures for morphing into later armies (like Renaissance Ottomans).
2) Sold all of my 28s except for skirmishy things like WWII, Gloire or .45 adventure. I still have some left that are going to flea markets/trades this year.
3) Finally got my Eastern Front early war WWII stuff playing and got 5 or 6 games in.
4) Got my 6mm WWII refocussed for IABSM and got a game in (just on Dec 29th)!
5) Succeeded in the Pledge (MonkeyHangar start the topic)!

On the down side my pulp terrain did not go well – that is for 2008

For 2008 more of the same theme
1) Get my 28mm Western Front ready to go with some more vehicles
2) Get 6mm WWII rejigged for company sized actions. Sell off the excess/ crappy stuff
3) Get 6mm ECW on the table
4) Get 6mm AWI started
5) Build 6 or 7 nice pulp boards
6) Run a kids game at a con
7) Finish up some long awaited rebasing of WWII and Napoleonics
