My "Voth" is (I think) a combination of the ST Voyager "Voth", the Stargate SG-1 "Unas" and the Enemy Mine "Drac":

If ever cast, it will sit atop GW Kroot bodies.

What do you think?

Very nice, I wish I had your skill with GS. He's kind of cute.

MOST EXCELLENT CC! WOW!

I do 'conversions' and some sculpting/kitbashing/mods…but your 'originals'…ZOWIE!

I honestly think you are one of sculpting's 'best kept secrets!'

You've talked more than once about your 'first drafts/early attempts' and not being as 'talented' etc…and I have to just go D'ohhh! IF this is a 'first attempt'…I dont' know if I could stand a 'professional piece!'

You're too darn 'modest'…just like a couple other chaps I've known here on TMP. Being 'humble' is all well and good, (compared to some of the FLAMBOYANT types we have seen/all talk-no 'show')…but SERIOUSLY…you've got 'the eye'.

I WISH you'd do MORE/get 'connected' with a molder/caster etc that would feature MORE of your work…(as in for sale!)

Did you think of doing a 'head sprue' for sf/vsf/fantasy figures? I mean Heresy, Hasslefree and others sell just 'parts sprues' for converstions/mods….we KNOW there is a 'market' for it…(just like 'bitz')..

I know I'd love a 'set' of those to use with 'krootish' figs or whatever!!!

*slish…slish*

Sgt DWW-a bartentacle envious of your talents!!!

CC,

Very nice, keep up the good work!

Dropzonetoe Fezian29 Dec 2007 4:58 p.m. PST

CC,

I quite like what you did.

If I might offer one suggestion, your head has no ears. I'd think that some sort of ear hole might be in order.

Cacique Caribe29 Dec 2007 5:15 p.m. PST

"I'd think that some sort of ear hole might be in order."

Thanks. I was feeling the same way, but thought I'd double check with you guys.

Mutant Q29 Dec 2007 5:46 p.m. PST

Hmmmmm… If I put this on the right body, I'd have Ithklur for Traveller.

Cacique Caribe29 Dec 2007 6:23 p.m. PST

Who/what is "Ithklur"?

CC

Mutant Q29 Dec 2007 6:36 p.m. PST

Ithklur: A reptilian subject race of the Hiver Federation. Ithklur are big, carnivorous, and enjoy violence, anarchy, and pretty flowers (no kidding). They're primarily used by the Hivers as shock troops.

If you can get a hold of a copy of The T20 supplement "Gateway To Destiny" there is a pretty good picture of one in combat armor, blazing away with an assault rifle, on page 31.

Not quite the Gorn look.

And that is a GOOD thing

Mike OBrien29 Dec 2007 7:32 p.m. PST

Kewl fig, er head. I could go either way…ear holes or none. I like the effect.

Allen5729 Dec 2007 7:56 p.m. PST

Love the head. I would vote "NO" earhole. What do you cast them in? Any possibility you would like to make a few extra and sell them? Not sure I would use them on a Kroot but there are lots of possibilities.

Cacique Caribe29 Dec 2007 9:16 p.m. PST

Thanks!

And the Enemy Mine "DRAC":

Also, please keep in mind that it is a head suitable for the body of a large figure like the Kroot.

As for casting it, I don't do any. However, if anyone is seriously interested in producing it, I would be all for it.

Goldwyrm29 Dec 2007 9:45 p.m. PST

Very, very good job!

Cacique Caribe30 Dec 2007 1:01 a.m. PST

In case anyone is wondering . . .

Dimensions

Front to back: 11mm
Top to bottom: 6mm

Like I said earlier, it was meant as a substitute for the GW Kroot head. My first attempt looked a bit tiny for that, so I went ahead and finished the one you see in the photos.

Now that the right one is done, it should be much easier to do smaller versions of it, to fit other bodies.

CC

Personal logo Dances With Words Supporting Member of TMP Fezian30 Dec 2007 2:22 a.m. PST

Here's an idea….

Should there be a 'kroot-substitute' type headsprue 'contest'???

Others have had different 'sculpting competitions'…why not some sort of 'master head sprue' contest by someone?

Heads would be designed for fitting on 'krootish' figures, but OBVIOUSLY able to go on many other 28-32mm figures for modifications/kitbashing?

Pig Iron and Hasslefree and several others sell 'bitz-sprues' INCLUDING 'heads/helmets' etc…Maybe something like this would be of 'interest' to TMP'ers?

As to 'ear holes'…nice thing about original sculpt is that IF you want ear holes..they can be 'added' to figure after or if already there…filled in if you don't. Now if you add 'spockish' ears….all bets are off I suppose! 8-)

*slish…slish*

Cacique Caribe30 Dec 2007 2:30 a.m. PST

DWW,

When you see it on a Kroot body, like here . . .

link

Does the head look too big?

I always felt that the Kroot heads were too small for their bodies, but I feel I may have over-compensated for that.

CC

Alxbates30 Dec 2007 6:03 a.m. PST

I think it looks great, Dan. Your sculpting just keeps getting better and better.

Judas Iscariot30 Dec 2007 7:05 a.m. PST

I think that his technical aspects are great.. Clean lines, and crisp edges…

His head is a bit big for that body though… Maybe get a metal Kroot body to put him on. I understand that all of the metal bodies are larger than the plastics.

Judas Iscariot30 Dec 2007 7:10 a.m. PST

I didn't see your question about that…

Yes… His head looks too big.

"Humanoid" bodies are supposed to be 6.5 to 7 "heads" tall. Miniatures will exaggerate that to 5 to 6 "heads" tall…

Looks like you are around 4 to 5 heads tall, and less if you measure it along the same axis that you would measure for a human head (chin to crown – yep.. Looks like 3.5 lengths using that measure, and 4.75 using the chin to brow line).

like I said… beautiful looking sculpt.. Wrong size for the body.

Dropzonetoe Fezian30 Dec 2007 7:16 a.m. PST

CC, Seeing it on the body it does seem a tad to big for my personal tastes. A slight reduction would be good to me.

That said there is no accounting for taste… some people prefer the look.
link

DWW,
I recall your posting in "men in rubber suits threads" as being against them… Then you go and suggest a alien head sprue where I can just add them to humanoid bodies. :)

It is however a great idea and one that would make me be highly interested in buying/making one for.

sekigahara30 Dec 2007 7:43 a.m. PST

Professional quality. Short and simple.
When do we see your figures in production?

Personal logo Dances With Words Supporting Member of TMP Fezian31 Dec 2007 2:52 a.m. PST

@Dropzonetoe-
'different….heads for different FREDS?'…I got tired of the 'ST:Nose Job of the week' when it was on tv, and some 'japanese/power-rangers big stompy monster' types…but you can NEVER have too many 'bitz'/alien heads, tentacles, etc…for kitbashing…

But since Victory Force has already done 'trekkish type' 'Head club for men, women, aliens and even alternate Universe figures'…I thought…what the heck! If you can't BASH 'em, LICK 'em!

*slish…slish*

and CC, I LOVE that 'alt head' on the krootish bod! I don't think it's 'too big' but if someone DID, they could always try it on an orc, nid or space marine 'bod'…just to 'see'

I always thought the actual 'kroot heads' were a bit small for the bodies anyway…but what the heck…

As soon as I get to the Post Office, that puppy is going to Ed of Two Hour Wargames!

Watch for future updates from Ed.

CC

28mmMan06 Jan 2008 2:23 p.m. PST

IMO the head does not look too big…in context. The creature could easily have sinus voids for extensive sense of smell and the larger dome could be from heat exchanging or armor plating that is layered vice soild bone (honeycombed).

Perhaps a small build up of the neck/shoulder muscles to add some tendon strength?

Eitherway…the look goes far to establish froglike in my view and shows a direction to being an ambush hunter…sleek body to make way through brush/flora, passive sensory system (smell and assumed sound…by the by a Drak style "ear pad" would fit nicely into the aft lower section of that huge melon!), but protected enough to absorb the inital reactive action of the "prey" to the face/head area.

I would be tempted to keep the head in that scale and play with the form later…maybe the fully sated and healthy creature swells with pride of a full belly or the mating season causes hormonal temporary growth…maybe larger heads are like antlers, horns, etc…

I would not give up on it just yet.

Cacique Caribe10 Jan 2008 8:20 p.m. PST

Ed (its new owner) seems to like it too, though I haven't given up on trying a slightly smaller version. :)

CC

Cacique Caribe14 Jan 2008 2:18 a.m. PST

Ok. I just finished another variant that is slightly smaller than the first.

Because I am on business travel, I do not have my usual equipment with me, including my digital camera.

Therefore, the moment I can borrow one from someone, I will post photos of that new head so you guys can give me some additional feedback.

Many thanks.

CC

Norscaman14 Jan 2008 5:31 p.m. PST

Okay, you need to cast those heads and sell them as replacement heads!!! I'll take a dozen!

Cacique Caribe14 Jan 2008 5:59 p.m. PST

I got called to respond to the Nevada levee break just when I was getting the heads done and sent to Ed at Two Hour Wargames.

As soon as I add the finishing touches to the second variant, I'm sending both to Ed. He tells me that he has plans to sell the heads separately and to have a body sculpted for them as well.

So . . . you may get your wish soon!

Fingers crossed.

Great news!

CC, please update us if it goes to plan.

Cheers,
Ian

Cacique Caribe15 Jan 2008 2:35 a.m. PST

Ian,

I may have photos of the second variant posted as early as tomorrow evening. After that, both variants will go to Ed.

So make sure to nag him constantly to get those head sprues produced! :)

CC

Cacique Caribe17 Jan 2008 8:54 p.m. PST

UPDATE:

I've actually done TWO more sculps of that head, the original one being the largest. The two new ones are of different sizes, each gradually smaller than the original. So, now there's a large (original) a medium and a small.

I think that the medium one is a better fit for the Kroot. The smaller one may actually fit on a standard 28mm figure (one with the right pose, that is).

If I had a camera I would take photos of those two. As I can't wait to find a camera, I am going to send on all three to Ed of Two Hour Wargames, who will put them into production, as separate head sprues and as part of a new range of reptilians he has planned.

I hope he is pleasantly surprised, since he was only expecting one and not three. :)

Update

Ed Teixeira of Two Hour Wargames just sent me a few photos of the small (C) and medium (B) variants of the reptilian heads I made for him:

I think he is going to have those head sprues done very, very soon.

Ed of Two Hour Wargames has just sent me a batch of casts of those three head sizes!!!

I must say, it feels weird to see your work done as a cast.

Hope you guys get to enjoy them too.
