Hi all,
I saw some instructions to build modern buildings out of cork tiles. You guys probably know which ones I am talking about as I have seen them mentioned on here before. I really like the sound of them and fancy building some. However I am worried that cork is too strong and the buildings might warp and fall apart easily during use. And they may only have a short life span.

Has anyone made anything out of cork and how durable is it.I dont really want to build some terrianonly for it to easily break apart. I though about using the same design but maybe using something a bit more tougher.

thanx for your help.

Foam board would be a good alternative, easy to work, and durable.

You need Matakishi's Tea House!

Oh and I've played a game with those very buildings and they were sturdy enough to live in :)

LOL Germy, I was going to refer him to Matakishi too . .. just love his site.

The colony buildings Paul has make from cork look pretty soild to me and I am in the process of copying them, or rather am about to start . . very inspirational site, one of the best around.

I use cork tiles for terrain boards, i use cork floor tiles.
they have been gamed on for over a year and are still doing good, no breakages to date.

I've built (though not completed) a number of city buildings based on Matakishi's designs and very sturdy they are. Certainly the cork is. The pieces aren't big enough to be "floppy". The only problem I've had was with small wooden balls that I used on the steps of my townhouses but a small hole and a pin soon sorts that out.

I think I'll fall apart before my buildings do :)

You'll definately want to use FLOOR tiles and not bulletin board grade tiles. The bulletin board grade is made of granulated cork and doesnt take as nice of a clean cut as the flooring tile.
The bulleting board type is still serviceable but I doubt it will be a durable as the flooring grade cork.

Be sure to check out Matakishi's Sci-fi colonial buildings too!

RavenscraftCybernetics – Too late :) I have like 20 sheets of bulletin board tile that are near worthless. I'll find a use I am sure, but they are not going to my buildings I was going to make.

@dropzone

Sounds like a lot of ruined walls or rubble in the making!

"Sounds like a lot of ruined walls or rubble in the making!"

I bought a few sheets of the dark and crumbly bulleting board type . . . just for that exact purpose.

I plan to give it a couple of washes of diluted wood glue, just to make sure they don't crumble further once the pieces are done.

I've made both colony and city buildings using Matakishi's plans my only alteration was using hotmelt glue instead of PVA (I'm impatient, so sue me) they are solid aas rocks and I reckon they should last years.

Photos of Toaster's city will be on my site as soon as I stop dying from the plague.
(I have a stinky cold and can't concentrate on anything atm)

What kind of paint should I use on these cork buildings? I went out, got some cork sheets and made some ruined building corners for 40K. I intend to detail them out a little bit. Should I use something to hide the "cork" texture or will the paint cover it up?

Cacique Caribe05 Jul 2007 6:23 a.m. PST

Toaster,

Hotmelt glue?

I like that. I'm the impatient type too. Thanks.

Another option for cork buildings is wood glue. Dries much quicker than PVA, and is stronger too.

Matakishi, I'm home from work with a filty flu too.

Rrunge3, I undercoated all my cork buildings with an old can of dark brown house paint (acrylic) that the previous owner left in the garage. I then drybrushed them with cheap poster paints such as kids use for art. The texture of the tiles improves them in my opinion but they do have a smooth side if you prefer.

CC, your welcome
