I wish I had kept track of where I found these. I think it was an educational supply website. But I just did a Google, and I couldn't find anything like them for sale.

Local Dollar Stores, or Party Stores? Especially around Halloween.

I bought some plastic Ants, more than a decade ago. They are truly terrifying, in 1e AD&D's Monster Manual: heavily armored, literally up to 400 of the beasties, and relentlessly capable of very great harm. The bat had 100+ ants in it. I started basing them around 5 years ago, but I moved away from that project as they are rather limited in variety of usage. I need to finish them as they are sooo easy to prep for a game.

I agree, both the Flies and the Ants, need some white/grey dry brushing to bring out their details. Otherwise they are just black lumps on the tabletop. Cheers!

FYI: that pearlescent green color you often see in bugs' eyes can be approximated using a pearlescent green nail polish. You should be able to find it at your local Dollar Store, or at Wal-Mart, in the cosmetics area.

I used a pearlescent green and a pearlescent red, on some plastic beetle bug shells. I found these plastic bugs, years ago, so I based them, painted them, and I use them for giant bugs in my D&D games. They actually turned out pretty good, and the nail polish looks as fresh, today, 5+ years later, as they did when I finished them; it has not flaked, or chipped, since it was applied.

If you visit your local cosmetic shop, be sure to pick up some broad make-up brushes, as well: they are superb for dry-brushing large figures and terrain. The make-up brushes are inexpensive compared to hobby/art brushes, and they work superbly. Cheers!

I found a spare bag of flies, so I can now tell you these are Kid Fun brand, 72-piece value pack, item #VL62 Mini Flies. Company is in Grandview, MO, but the flies are made in China.
