I did similar, with rubber-like scorpions. I mounted them onto MDF bases, textured the bases with multi-colored sand mixtures glued on with PVA Glue. They're OK, good enough for the rare times that I use them in a fantasy game.

I believe I Hot Glued mine to their bases. Hot Glue does hold HDPE/LDPE plastics to MDF, really well. I game with 54mm-60mm plastic Army Men, based on 50mm squares, textured with the sand mixtures. I use Hot Glue on these H/LDPE figures, and they are securely held to their bases, without issue, for 20+ years and counting. I am a big fan of Hot Glue for basing most plastic figures to the MDF bases I universally employ. Cheers!

I've got a Hot Glue gun, never used it yet. Maybe it's time! grin
