Wood Sealer would likely solve the grain showing through the paint. That is what is necessary for MDF: paint will tend to soak into the surface of MDF, unless it is first Sealed. MDF does not take primer paints very well, unsealed.

I think they look decent. I would suggest painting the shelf liner to match the 'water' color of the swamp terrain pieces, though, to make them appear more as a continuous terrain. At this point, they contrast too much with each other, being very different in main colors. Cheers!
