Spoke with Brent. These were painted back in the old days, with oil paints, and those terrible brushes with thick plastic bristles (remember those!).

And yes, the 'eye technique' in those days was to paint the eye white, then jab it with a toothpick to form the eyeball. grin

Best wishes to Brent, who is recovering from surgery at the moment.
