The huge eyes ruin an otherwise fine paint job. |

It amazes me that people can paint most things to an acceptable standard and yet do eyes so badly. The easy way to make acceptable eyes: - Dark eye socket - A very short and slim line to represent the white of the eye with a dark dot in the middle that goes from top to bottom. Just make sure if one eye is looking left or right, the other one is too. |

I don't see a Sai in this models hands. I can see the chucks in his right but his left seems to have a scimitar. The Sai is is more of a trident and looks like this. link |

It's much harder to make a poorly sculpted figure look better with a paintjob. The miniature itself is just not good. As the others have said the eyes are the only thing wrong with the paintjob. |

The funny thing is, the eyes really aren't that big
but they look huge in the photos. I checked the figure, and I think the problem is that the skin highlights are blending with the white of the eyes in the photos. I'll try 'retouching' the figure

It is difficult to judge fine details in a photo but I would have said to replace the white area in the eye socket with a dark brown. That would define the socket and you'd be pretty far along towards making it a much better face. Look at a real person. Their eye sockets are always kind of shadowy. That's why a lot of people just do a dark wash and call it a day on the eyes. That technique actually works pretty well and is far more acceptable than eyes done badly. |

That's why a lot of people just do a dark wash and call it a day on the eyes. Yup! Pretty close. Look at a "real person" at the distance where they look like a 28mm figure. When Putnam (or was it Prescott?) said "Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes!" I don't think he meant 200 yards. |

A RAFM painting pamphlet gave a tip for eyes that I like. You don't use white, use a light grey instead. It keeps the eyes from getting the white "pop". |

That makes sense but gray or white, a crappy implementation is crap and a good one will be good. |

At least you got the mini painted and I like the colors used. On the paint for the skin, it appears a little thick. That could explain the problems you had with washes pooling and/or the highlights popping out where the surface might have been smoother. Which paints and inks did you use? |

I've gotten to the point where I just darken in the socket and then paint a thin line of whatever color I'm using for the mid-tone on the flesh. Seems to work well, almost never needs touch up and doesn't make the figure look all googly eyed. I used to spend too much time on eyes just to have them never look good or proportionate. As John OFM pointed out, if you were looking at a human at that distance in real life, you wouldn't see the whites and pupils. |
