I think the larger base was a good call. I guess you use bubble wrap, packing peanuts, and include a bottle of superglue gel.

Not as common as in my hippy days, but there are still small styro beads for filling 'bean bag' furniture. Should work for something small. Maybe line a box with soft foam first, though.

As for the color, I'm fine with the green, though I'd have suggested a contrasting color for the belly plates.
