1944 Falaise Gap Scenario using Spearhead. My German armoured column was wiped out by allied aircraft [9 Apr 99]

John Hingley-Hickson

My last battle was the British involvement in the battle for the Ardennes (something which is not well written about).

TAC:WWII as usual gave a thoroughly good feel for the battle, the tactics used and the formations. It allows flexibility, yet accurate historical representation.

In this battle, the guards division advanced, to help our American cousins who were in the doo doo, YET AGAIN. The British advanced with the armour taking on the King Tigers, while the infantry took the Panzer Grenadiers. This action was a delaying action until the rest of the division was able to arrive and halt the German advance. Very thrilling action with the armour almost being destroyed, while the infantary held their own. The whole flavour of the game could only be experianced through Tac. [6 Apr 99]

Operation Battleaxe - A modified version of the central thrust by the 22 Guards Brigade and the 4th and 7th RTR vs Point 206 and Fort Capuzzo. The British objective was to capture both geographic features while fighting off a counter attack by 15th Panzer. The British players never captured the Fort but did manage to fight off counter-attack (never attack Matildas head on!). The end result was a draw. [6 Apr 99]

In my last Battle with Spearhead I played on the German side trying to stop the Indians of the 4th Indian Division from breaking out of Benghazi. [29 Mar 99]

late 1943 Town fight, US vs German, Using CD3

US forces: Weak Inf Bn: Bn Cmd std, 2 inf coy, 2 MMG stds, attached: 2 recon Jeeps, 1 recon White scout car. German Forces: Very Weak Inf Bn: Bn Cmd std, 1 Inf Coy, 1 Wpn Coy plus ATR std (shrek) All: Regular Morale 8. Light Rain The US objective was to clear a small town, the Germans to hold it.

The US managed to infiltrate into the town via a covered (forest) approach on the far left flank, this move was covered by the MMGs and Scout Car, the other side of the town was under observation by dismounted patrols from the Jeeps.

The Germans on spotting the intrusion attempted to relocate to contain the US coys, in the move two German plts (MMG and Inf) fell foul to the US MMGs and the US patrols spotted the withdrawl from their sector.

Each US coy occupied a building block while the US MGs moved into a small orchard prepority to 1 coy storming the building block that the Germans had moved into. The attack managed to force an entry due to covering fire that had forced back the defenders the previous turn.

The Patrols (now formed into a single recon platoon) managed to attack a German MMG plt from the rear which combined with some violent close quarters fighting in the main building block led to the Germans becoming demoralised in contact (and hence destroyed). At this point the German Bn Cmd stand, mortar and regrouped Infantry std withdrew.

US losses: 1 White scout car destroyed (Penetrated by 16), 1 Infantry stand destroyed, Most stands Red. German Losses: 2 MMG stds, 1 Weapon Std, 1 Shreck std, 1 cmd Inf std, 1 Inf std (regrouped).

The game was a lot of fun, about 10 turns long, played in one and a half hours including set up time!

I'm very happy with Command Decision 3. Can't wait for the modern version. [29 Mar 99]

N. Africa Italians vs Brits Italians hold 2 hills waiting for german armor to come and help. Brits hit weaker of the hills with 2 inf Bttn and a 2 sqdn Matilda Regt.

Other hill attacked by CIH with 3 Sqdn MkVI and Brens. Bad day for CIH as Italian AT and AA guns chew up light armor.

The infantry attack was much more sucessful. The Italian Bttn holding the outer hill was reduced from 4 to 2 cos. and all the hvy Weaps were lost.

But several Matildas were hurt and the Infantry were beat up on. Next week the M13's arrive and the Brits attack the other hill. [21 Feb 99]
