"DBAcon?" Topic

DBA was recently voted the most popular tournament game. Would you be interested in attending a wargaming show or convention which was themed around DBA?

Yes, I would, especially if there was DBA events that covered all sorts of historical periods beyond the rules coverage. And depending on where it was located as well.

By the way mm make no more difference in DBA than in any other game. Either you make it or you don't if your a mm out of range in a WWII game – your out of range.

In any event, such conventions have exist for many years and continue,, around the world and 100's of players attend. The first in the US was De Bellis Columbus

I don't understand people's aversion to millimeters. You just have larger numbers of a smaller unit. Friendly players will still give their opponent the benefit of the doubt if something is 1/8 inch over or 3 mm over.

Absolutely if it is 3.0, HoTT 3.0 variant, DBA-RRR 3.0 variant or any other 3.0 variant. That and it would have to be within 4 hours or so.

EXACTLY. Where I am, it's 2.2 or die.

If DBM works, Bayou Wars is basically a giant DBM tournament with a few other games around the edges.

I have already attended a few of these, most recently the HoTT event at Slimbridge (a bonus, its only a mile from my house) :)

I'd certainly go depending on location. It would be great if they had exhibition or demonstration games explaining the rules as they go, like a live version of the battle in Sue's book.

An hour or so trip, you bet. They're never that close.

I'd pick Atlanta of course – but Nashville has a built in community of DBA players.

I'm theortically in charge of US events so would be happy to take suggestions.

Measurement in DBA is by Base Widths (40mm in 15mm and 60mm in 25+mm).

Also preferred time frame etc.

We are currently trying to establish a US National Championship tournament and also a DBA Cup (most wins over a season – to give a chance to folks who can't travel to a NICT).

Feedback welcome.

I'd say somewhere in Ohio, unless the geographic distribution of DBA players is not the same as the general poplulation.

If it is in the south, make it a winter show.

The first US DBA CON was held in Columbus Ohio, as noted above. This had a very good turnout. Origins is held in Columbus so they must know something about population distribution.

It would be good if this were not held close to a major national or regional convention. Perhaps halfway between historicon and fall in, but obviously not on a Ohio State football game day :-)

The country (USA) is too big to expect everybody to come to one site, So maybe there needs to be in East and West version. I don't think many people would want to spend hundreds of dollars to fly to a game, at least one far away.

I have been discussing with some people doing a Midwest DBA convention in conjunction with having a Midwest Dba league, like they have in the UK.

Please include a selection for 'not a historical gamer'

For the US, we do have a wide geographic distribution. There are pockets of players in California, Illinois, Texas, Florida, Michigan, the South East and North East. No matter where you put it, it would be a long trip for someone.

If you had to pick a location, I agree with Bob that Ohio would be a location that can be a more central location for some of the player. Columbus or Cincinnati would be good choices.

We could do a mass survey of people with an interest in DBA events and enter their zip codes into some application to help figure out something more mathematical.

Dio, excellent suggestion about doing a survey. What we need is a roster of all DBA players in the USA who want to be part of a larger community Beyond their local group.

Bob, You can find the the poll results in the completed polls section. It was very recent. 33% of the responders in the final poll thought DBA the best set for tournaments. In the first round (completed 8-4) DBA got 47 votes or 16%.

I think a Con that was organized just around 1 rules set would be a tough one to pull off financially (says the accountant.)

From the other recent polls:

- 75% of gamers go to none, 1 or 2 conventions a year, so would people really come to an additional con?
- 60% of gamers like games that are in the 3 tp 4 hour range of time, so I don't think you are going to get a lot of new gamers there.

Here in the Midwest, I had heard that NavCon which was just concentrating on naval gamning is merging with WhatCon.

All of this suggests a separate con might be poorly attended. I would suggest making it a part of a larger convention and I would further suggest that it be more widely themed as AncientsCon. There are a number of midwest conventions that would work, including Little Wars, Adeption, and Origins, that is if you were trying to come up with a site that was not the East Coast.

A separate con that might compare would be the Seven Years War Con. If you did the con in conenction with the Society of Ancients and made it an ancients con, that might have enough to attract a bigger crowd

My thoughts are to set up a survey specific to DBA in the USA. It would ask such questions as:
1. State one resides
2. How far one would be willing to travel for DBA event
3. Type of event preferred
4. Scale preferred
5. Season of year preferred

Maybe a few others. The results then reviewed.

The answer from data collected could lead us to just run at a convention that already exists, or set up a new one, or some other option.

I think a survey of DBA players would be helpful for us to get organized as a community and to grow the game.

If it was close enough I'd consider going.

Diocletian, you may already use it, but I find surveymonkey easy to use.

Awesome idea.

I like the idea, but am unlikely to be able to make any event. Travel would just cost too much.

How about taking Terry Webb's Good Bad and Ugly idea and have a a National DBA Tournament, at different locations. On one weekend hold events in a number of cities around the country. Use the same format in all venues and then compare scores of players for a national champion.

I'd check it out sure.

If it was a choice between that and something else, maybe not.
