Hi Folks

I'm re-basing some Essex 15mm Cuirassiers as Pi(S) for a 30 years war army but the rules call for 4 horsemen to a 40 by 30 base. This is impossible – they just won't fit across the frontage and the base isn't deep enough to stagger them without heads and tails overhanging the edges of the base.

As I'm new to DBR I'd like to ask what other people normally do in this situation.

Do you just put 3 on the base ?

Do you use a deeper base and stagger them ?

Do you cram 4 on the correct base with bits hanging over the edges ?

I've had a similar problem with the pikemen – I should have bought only vertical pikes – and those are protruding beyond the base, even when double-based and packed like sardines at the rear of the base.

Any advice much appreciated.

I use 25mm numbers for 15mm basing.

Tony
I painted up a 15mm French Huguenot army a few years back using Essex figures, and the only way I got the Huguenot cavalry and reiters to fit was to stagger them on slightly deeper bases.

I personally just use 3 to a base and nobody has ever objected.

Given theat, most local club members stagger the figures on the base so 4 do fit, with one riders knees tucked behind those on either side. I think it looks messy, but it usually is possible to make them fit.

Use 3 if you prefer. It's a game.

Unfortunately all the figures have a pistol or sword in hand and that hand is held out so they won't stagger without a base at least 10mm deeper.

The problem with doing what I choose is that they aren't for me but for sale on e-bay. I started putting an army together for 30YW to play against a pal but he got about 6 times as much painted so my few are redundant. It seemed most likely that basing for DBR would make them more saleable hence the query.

Thanks for the advice, I think I'll go with 3 to a base – at least that way the bases are correctly sized.

I would think that they would sell better unbased than based for any specific game.
