Just wondering if anyone still plays. The Forge of War forum is kind of dead about FUBAR.

On the rare occasions I get to play anymore, FUBAR is still my game of choice, though I've houseruled it for my purposes. I really prefer light-weight systems.

It's my go to game these days. I tried Ultra, but I think that I prefer the regular 4.0 with modified troop stats. But yes, I play it every few weeks or so.

I think Craig is pretty busy these and FUBAR is hardly his flagship game. Also, the forum is normally quiet anyway.

The Forge of War forum is kind of dead about FUBAR.

Maybe they're too busy playing to bother talking about it on a forum!

I switched to KR16 and am now planning on using PMC2640 & 5150 Star Army/Battalion Commander depending on the size of the game.

I like Fubar. I helped a little in shaping it. I still use it occasionally. It badly needs some tweaks and a new approved version. The one page format needs to be dumped. It serves no real purpose at this point.

I remember saying along with some others that the creation of the Forum spelt doom for the rules lively discussion. Sure as heck it happened. Perhaps with Craigs eventual focus on his commercial set may have halted Fubar development anyway. It's possible. But it would have been a year or two later and perhaps a final version would have been agreed upon. Now there simply are too many variants floating around.

Thanks,

John

Why do they need to dump the single page format?
I have heard this a few times from people but for me the reason I use it is that at one page I can use it with anyone who wants to play and in just a few minutes we are underway.
Its pretty basic but for me that has always been the joy of it.
What would you add once the single page format was dumped and are we talking about a pamphlet, booklet, book or tome?

I am going to disagree with John.
Which is kind of reassuring, as if I agreed he may think I have been replaced with an alien!

I think the forum is dead because some of the main advocates of the rules no longer post about the rules.

If it had remained a Yahoo group I believe it would still be dead because some of the main advocates of the rules no longer post about the rules.

I also disagree about the one page format.
I was sold on FUBAR because of the one page format; that is its hook, its USP.
To make it many pages will make it just blend into all the other many page rules and fail to stand out.

FUBAR is a one page set of very fast simple skirmish rules.
That is its identity.
That is what it does well, very well in fact.

I was drawn to this and after a while, as did many people, I tinkered with the rules.
Then one day it dawned on me that I had so many house rules and mods that I had ‘outgrown' FUBAR (not in a bad way) and wanted something a bit more meaty.
I no longer wanted a one page set of rules.
Maybe that is what others found?

FUBAR is a great set of rules and it is totally responsible for me starting my own range of 6mm sci-fi figures.
I like it, I like it lots.
But it no longer has any appeal, as I no longer want a one page set of rules.

Maybe to drum up interest in it again, the avid players could post more game reports and show off how easy to use it is?
I don't think the one page format is the issue, just the lack of exposure…

Michael.

I don't think FUBAR is dead. What does one want out of a one-page set though? I'll break it out when I've got a friend who sees my toys and wondrrs what I do with them, or if there's some vague idea for a scenario I want to try before spending ages to make it work with some other ruleset.

PapaSync09 Jul 2014 12:41 p.m. PST

Lonstrider is right. I do the same whenever someone get curious. Its great for bringing in new faces and real quick pick up games. And for indoctrinating the young ones.

Even Craig came to the realization that 1 page wasn't going to cut it with where Fubar was heading. There are simply too many things that won't fit on 1 page. Face it, when Craig was worrying about Font size to keep the rules at 1 page since so much stuff was being crammed on that page even he realized it was time for the rules to develop into a multi-page set. There are simply too many vague areas with a 1 page. As an intro set that's fine. But look at all the variants in the files section. There would be the 1 page core rules and 1-5 for the variant. So the 1 page really became just a talking point if you were using a variant to game with.

For the record, the Yahoo group was rocking when the Forum split happened. I told Craig at that time it was a mistake as did others. The forum had some activity. But within a year (maybe less) it crashed in activity. The Yahoo group did as well. It may be all moot since Craig went on to bigger and better things (well at least that paid)!

grin

Thanks,

John

I use it, and "one-page", double-sided, so really two pages, if truth in advertising rules are being rigidly enforced.

I've modified the activations by using 10-sided dice for that, so poor troops aren't so hamstrung, yet still have the possibility of hesitating at critical moments.

I ran a game back in March at HAVOC. A few grognards signed up seemingly with the intent to pick it apart. Except for one guy who started an argument with another player about line of sight, everyone fell right into the game and enjoyed it. That one player came around after I looked him dead in the eye and remarked that its just a game, no need to get angry. And he lightened up, then his luck swung in his favor(must be karma, heh). All the players enjoyed the rules once they let go of their assumptions and just played.

Angel Barracks10 Jul 2014 2:42 a.m. PST

Yeah, all this.
It is a great Back To Basics game, playing simply for the joy of it, like when we were wee laddies and lassies.
