We played a game of WRG 4th edition ancients this weekend pitting my 3rd c. Romans versus Bill Stewart's Seleucids. Write-up in on my blog: link

Brings back some great memories!! I loved playing all of the WRG rules back when. I still love the WRG muskey and ball rule. Yhey all take some defining but actually work very good for a game. Thanks fot the pics and story.

Hadn't played WRG 4th edition since 1977, but I kept a copy for at least 20 years. Think I reduced the amount of hits each figure could take to make things go faster.

That's a blast from the past, all right – nice pics, too!

The very first miniatures I ever played were WRG,although I have no idea what edition,in 1978. I was 13 years old, completely clueless, and the game was run by a sneering old Grognard, who referred to my game as "A comedy of errors". I am quite glad that I never listened to that old blowhard, because I would have missed out on a great hobby, otherwise.

Loved the account and appreciated the shots of the various figures, especially as I am in the midst of adding some Armenian cataphracts to Mithridates of Pontus' army as allies.

I was wondering now on earth you managed to fit 4 x cataphracts on 60mm WRG bases and then I read further!!! Novel idea and they have turned out very well.

Cheers

Garry

Ah yes, great memories. I maintain that WRG provided the most satisfying games of all I've tried, completed in a very reasonable time frame. Much better than the "rock/paper/scissors" games of late where an extra layer of paint on a stand may inspire a silly millimeter argument of Biblical proportions.

Good times.

David:

Awesome looking game and equally fantastic array of figures. Will this game (or another WRG game) be on the PEL for Enfilade? I hope so. Dean

I remember 4th ed being published having started with 3rd ed amended when I was 11. The games were good fun but then RPGs came along and my Ancients playing dropped in intensity for a couple of decades.

There are a decent number of people in the UK who still play 6th ed, there were 42 of them at the Derby tournament last year. I don't think there are many that still play 4th.

I played 6th edition briefly with someone else. We hit on 4th ed. because it was less fiddly than 6th edition. Also, the 4th edition rules are available free online, which isn't true of 5th and 6th eds.

I started playing 5th edition after playing FGU's "Legion" at first. I think playing was one of the best gaming periods I've experienced. (Though I know that for many others regarded them as a bit on the hellish side,)
