Or do I need to invest in some luxury preloved Ebay items ?

I assume the basing is the same as 5th ?

if it is, I might be doing some comparison games !

It depends to be honest. You should be able to use all your miniatures but points have gone down in a lot of lists so you might need to add some miniatures! Basing is all the same but they have given benefits to larger units (ie wider).

I used them that way but bear in mind that SHI under 5th are not SHI under 6th, e.g. Roman Legionaries with antic Dacian armour bought as SHI under 5th, will be absolutely lethal as SHI in 6th so downgrade them to EHI..just need to double check armour descriptions but pretty much the usual troops stayed the same.
What lists are you after?

Sorry I should have clarified it; did you want some 6th lists or 5th? I've got a book of lists which includes 6th Edition Roman either early or middle imperial. I don't have the others but from memory the Gallic/Galatian and British were very different depending on chosen period. ANother option is to use DBM lists and just work out the figures from the elements allowed.
If I remember, British had about 16 LcH, 30xLC,Irg C, JLS, Sh; 60 x Slingers, Irg C, LI, S; around 200 LMI, Irg C, JLS, Sh; 20-30 LMI, Irg A, JlS, Sh. Cmd were 25 each (Irg)
Virtually all Celtic infantry was LMI, JLS, Sh. Gallic Cavalry was MC, Irg B JLS, Sh or could be Irg A as Soldurii. Gallic infantry could be Irg A as Gaesati or Soldurii as well, and the whole army could be Irg A if you chose. Early Gallic had about 6-8 LcH instead of MC.

cheers
Jon.

When 6th ed was published 5th ed lists were all we had – it was not difficult to map them accross

I preferred 5th lists, not as many and not as many options within each list.

Yes, I do have the lists for 5th. Sad eh?

6th lists are tweaked quite a bit, so for example my 'Belisarian Byzantine' army, one of several Byzantine armies in 5th lists had to become an 'early Byzantine', one of just three lists for the nation iirc, with some different options and essential troops compared to 5th.

5th had one book for all its lists, but 6th had 3 books for early middle and later armies. It was usual to fight an opponent from the same book, so light chariots versus Teutonic Knights wasnt seen too often…..

As well as the 3 official army lists, there was a fourth book by Colin Froud, called Book of Hosts, which I personally have never seen, but which pops up in conversation now and again. I think it fills in some army variants rather than extends the period.

Id always use the 6th lists over 5th. You have much more flexibility and choice, and things such as elephants are much better handled.

The "Book of Hosts" is rather a series of 6 books, quite extensively extending (isn't my English lovely) the range of armies mainly for 6th edition players. I am not one of the experts, but I gues you could call them semi-official, sometimes they were/are allowed in tournaments, sometimes not.
