Like it says, I tried WRG 7th out awhile back and thought the rules were so dated and clanky, why would anyone torture themselves with WRG 6th or WRG anything? |

A lot of people play WRGs rules; DBA, DBM, DBMM or DBR, and I presume because of the existence of this list, 6th edition. Never liked them myself, but they have a significant following I believe. |

The only ancients rules we use in my game group. |

The language is clanky but the mechanics work once you have played any of the WRG flavors out there. Learning curve is an issue though :-) I came into ancients with 6th edition but didn't play actively until 7th edition. 7th edition has too much manuever and shooting is very powerful. 6th edition had some funny quirks regarding testing morale for seeing skirmishers rout. 6th Edition is probably more straight forward than 7th edition but to me, combat was always about better armor and weapons winning. Not too much subtlety but this is reason that many liked the rules too :-) I find Field of Glory to be satisfying. The rules are clearly written BUT there is still a learning curve as it is easy to miss something (go through the detailed step by step turn sequence and QSR, and it eliminates 95% of missing things :-). Thankfully the authors have released a "Player's Index" that helps. If you like less detail, I would probably recommend Impetus based on what I have read around the Internet. Not my cup of tea as I like to see unit formations. If you want to go down even more in detail, I would probably recommend Big Battle DBA. But you will still need to have a minor in Barkerese to translate :-) I don't recommend DBM or DBMM. To me, they add detail where it isn't needed and really just build on the DBA formula. |

Yup, still play 'em – I like the results I get ! |

Learned them nearly 30 years ago: like them, don't see any reason to change. Who needs all this new-fangled junk? Get off my lawn, you kids! |

We still use the WRG 1685-1845 rule set for SYW and later, since 1979. Remarkable, considering English is a second or third language here. As Ancientsgamer mentioned, the big battle option for DBA defiantly adds another level to an otherwise easy to learn game. Cheers, Robert 18thcenturysojourn.blogspot.com |

No & Yes. While the group here played 5th,6th, & even 7th (for a year) for 20 years we finally settled on Big Battle DBA (after a year long fling at DBM). But we do play a LOT of games of that. |

We still play WRG 6th. We have fun and isn't that the main goal to begin with? Never saw a reason to change. We still play George Gush's rules for renaissance. |

"

there is a small but active WRG 6th 28mm circut at the UK tourney sceen. We cross with them in our small but active Aramati 15mm sceen on occasion. just because its new doesn't mean its the only option. quite what WRG 6th players have to specifically discuss on this forum though, escapes me. timurlank, English seems a second or third language to all WRG rules writers, so it being so for the player would be a positivie advantage

I'd play it again like a shot, but it was always mainly a 25mm set and there are no opponents here now, all the 25mm guys rebased to DBX long ago, tried FoG, didn't like it much and went back to DBX and recently are trying Impetus. To re buy a 25mm army 6th edition army and get it painted (I have neck problems so can't paint without causing myself pain and I don't want to end up stooped) would just cost too much, even with plastic figures. In the end when I went back into 25mm I went for Impetus, decent enough rules and far less figures required. As an aside I think all these extra boards do TMP no favours, it just fragments things leaving a whole load of seldom used boards that rarely get looked at. |

Not ancients I know, but I still go back to WRG's 1850-1985 modern(ish) rules when i want a fun, quick game. |

I would if I could but there is no active Ancients gaming going on here. Or where I lived before. Seems like it's been 20 years since I was around an active Ancients gaming group. |

We've got maybe 8 – 10 players at our club and run an annual tournament which sees thirty – fifty competitors. |

I have all these 1500 pt armies that just don't have enough bases for FoG

"I have all these 1500 pt armies that just don't have enough bases for FoG
" Yeah I hear ya, I have a few left over DBM & DBR armies, bought a bunch of FoG books and found I don't have enough bases to play that game either, so went to Impetus, then found I can't use my DBR armies for 30YW because no army lists. |

I played WRG games just not 1-7th edition or Gush rules, didn't realize anyone still did, since the DBx craze hit the scene, humm. |
20thmaine | 24 Mar 2011 10:55 a.m. PST |
If you already have the figures based up and ready to go, then why not ? Or can pick up someone else's armies cheap when they change over to a new rule set, then again, why not ? |
Chazzmak | 25 Mar 2011 11:40 a.m. PST |
I agree with Alphanor. Used WRG series since the mid seventies. Young whippersnappers don't appreciate the classics! |

On the day I have more time than I know what to do with I plan to fight the same battle with WRG 1-6 and see how the results change ! |

i have been playing 6th for 20years. six of us play regularly at our club in reading |

Always thought 7th edition was a good set of rules to play with two consenting adults, but can see why never taken up much in tournaments, a few bad dice rolls could destroy an army in a couple of bounds! I now play Warrior rules which are basically 7th edition updated to be more readably, with more details for those who can only play by the rules rather than apply cowmen sense |
Jon Lead Slayer | 23 Apr 2012 12:47 p.m. PST |
The rules are written is such a way to make it a rules lawyer's paradise. I stopped playing it years ago along with DBA & DBM. I have heard of Warrior rules but have never been able to get my hands on them to play. |
