My brother-in-law recently passed away and I volunteered to take a look through his miniatures collection and get an idea of what they are worth. It is easily more than 1,000 figures, all based for WRG rules. It is like a time capsule of late 1970s miniatures. So I am going to share pictures and I ask that you help me try to identify them.

First up is a 450 figure Viking army. These figures were collected and painted from about 1975 to 1981. I recognize a few of them as old Heritage figures from their Lord of the Rings line. The rest are a mystery to me; I am guessing Minifigs, Hichcliffe, and Lamming? I will get some closeups and post them also.

The figures are in rough shape and glued onto painted metal bases. There are quite a few bent or missing spears. They do have some charm though and it was nice to array them on a table after so many years jumbled in boxes.

Here are some closeups of the skirmishers.I think the slingers and some of the javelin men may be Hichcliffe, but I have no idea on the others.

I think I can spot some Essex. And maybe some Citadel also. They were available around that time.
Perhaps Garrison also.

If, and big if, they are for sale then you could market them as Retro Vikings!

Very cool.

Photo 5, 7th from left is a Grenadier viking from the pre-blister, 1976 catalog.

Second post, top photo, far right. Definitely Essex. Unless it isn't. grin
As are, I think, second photo, stand on left. Both may be Essex.

Not all are specifically "Viking" figures either.
I see some Saxons, Carolongian, Varangian, and Sarmatian figures.

Some minifigs Sword and Sorcery rage.

I agree that he was loose with his definition of 'Viking"; I think any figure that was even close to fitting the description got painted and put on the stand. So he had very few unpainted figures laying around (unlike me).

GarrisonMiniatures17 Nov 2016 4:24 p.m. PST

Certainly a couple of Garrison Saxons and at least one Garrison Viking.

A Hinchcliffe Sarmatian there with the two handed axe.

There are a couple of old Dixon Vikings in there too, at each end of the line in the last photo.

A blast from the past.

Last picture and l-r 5 and 6 remind me of the Citadel Dark Ages range, from the days when code A was 20p and code B 25p.
