I love the look of 10mm Imperial Romans, but there isn't a historical opponent I'd want to paint or own. The barbarians just get crushed.

I have a nice Warmaster Orc army. I'm wondering how the two systems would work together? The Romans have tons of heavy infantry, excellent morale and discipline. More than a match for most barbarians. But they haven't encountered magic, trolls, ogres, etc. that could break up their formations.

It might be interesting. Has anyone tried something like this?

Imperial Romans = Gondor. Why not?
Might need to let them go heavier on the artillery however to take down those trolls etc.

It aint heresy – these are toy soldiers we are playing with after all!

But I will say with Hail Caesar barbarian warbands do stand a chance with their clash stats. If they don't break through the first time the law of diminishing returns does start to apply though. Today for our Battle of Watling Street I will be trialling a house rule, 'Recall', which allows the Barbarians to pull back, reform, and go in again back using their clash values…Might just do the trick!

Years ago I saw a fellow who had done some very nice Orcs out of Romans.

I think barbarians plus magic would do pretty well to model orcs. How much magic depends on how you see your orcs. The earliest versions of Chainmail just had fantasy creature fight as various numbers of men and treated magic as artillery hits.

Use the WM army list generator online for the WMA Imperial Romans. It should work just fine against Orcs. 12 years ago I made IR counters for Warmaster but I can't seem to find my army list for them.

How about Imperial romans as a historical opponent. They probably won't get crushed.

We did a whole hail ceaser fantasy set of rules extensions (based heavily on WM) they are in the Hail Ceaser fantasy yahoo group

You could also just stat the Romans up as WM fantasy troops – there are plenty of WMA lists for the Romans.

Regarding magic, why not let the Romans field Mars the god of war?
