My friends and I are building some Dark Age armies (Saxons, Vikings, Normans, and Welsh) and have played a couple of test games with the Hail Caesar rules. Does anyone have any rule modifications or house rules they would like to share with us to make the game feel more period appropriate? Thanks, Gert |

Be sure to include a few Medium units in your armies – seems very appropriate for a time when few could afford full arms and armour. The medium class often gets overlooked for more durable heavies or more flexible lights. You may also want to limit the number of lance armed Norman knights (depending on how early your time period is). |

Everyone in the club seems to be building around a 50/50 mix of heavy and medium units. I wonder if that is too many heavy units for the game. Our light units are all small skirmish units. |

i use HC for the dark ages all the time! lots of fun. the only house rule i use really is that med and hvy foot can close ranks, not just hvy. my armies typically are composed along the lines that you are already thinking; around a 50/50 or 60/40 mix of med to hvy foot, small light infantry for most bow / sling armed skirmishers. i've done a post on using HC for the battle of Ethandun in the HC section. and am right now building up my normans to do hastings. |

Thanks Stewart -- I checked out your AAR on Ethandun, and may borrow some of your special rules. Here is the link for anyone else following this thread: TMP link |

i ditched the rule about shooting and fleeing for skirmishers. they now MUST run when charged by formed enemy. glad that was useful. good luck with your games, should be fun. |
