I've used muskets in FoG-R games but I'm thinking about adding a Covenanter force which of course use muskets*.

Poring over the rules, I was surprised to see that the deficiencies of this are so minor ( less dice in rear ranks at Long Range).

This seems an inadequate representation of units with fewer muskets &/or poor marksmanship?

Actually it is the same at long range, but less dice in rear ranks at short range. It isn't much difference, but it is often the difference between forcing someone to take a cohesion test or not, or an extra pip on the dreaded death die.

Don't forget, that 1/2 bases are rounded down for shooting.

Also remember that Covenanters have compulsory "poor" troops – minimum of 3 BGs of foot, IIRC – that require you to re-roll any 6s in your firing (the fact that I rarely throw those anyway explains why they are one of my favourite mid-17th Century armies!).
