Played my first game of AoA from Thanes Games yesterday. It was very enjoyable and I must say exciting. Went a bit slow as my opponent (my son) and I learned our way through the rules. We played with 1020 points per army. I played Gobbos he played Dwarves. I have a HUGE respect now for Dwarf Bear Cavalry.

We both liked the rolling for to see who moves first at the start of each movement turn. We both loved the combat resolution, not losing a regiment because the other guy has a banner is awesome. The simul. shooting is nice to. I also love the unit/monster/character creation rules that come with it, that is probably my favorite part of the rules, now I can play with more stuff.

Tonight we are going to add spellcasters to our armies and maybe some monsters as well. I need something to go and hunt some stinking stunties on bears.

What is the basing setup like? Could I use my 15mm (40mm frontage) HoTT army?

Not from what I've read. You'd have to base each figure on 15mm bases. I have the same problem with my 15mm Wood Elves based for DBF/HOTT.

So long as both armies are mounted consistently, any basing works. I usually based my troops several to a base anyway and just use casualty caps as appropriate.

The only thing difficult about that is if you decide to move a unit from rank-and-file formation into skirmish formation.

Glad your first game went well. Nice to play a game where having fifty guys in a unit actually means something in combat, eh?

One word of advice when you first try out the magic system, your mages may not seem very impressive at first, but if you can spend the time to store up for the big three-point spells *and* get them past enemy countermagic, you'll see why wizards cost so much. Try to use roughly equal numbers of mages at first too, that way both sides will have to think a bit about how to spend their power…cast or counter, cast or counter, hmmm…

@Hypnogogue

The only time the basing would be a problem would be when going from a Rank and File formation into a skirmish. I am sure that if you and your opponent could agree on a signifier for this it could be worked around. Casualty caps might actually make it easier to eyeball how much of a unit has been taken out when you are looking at rolls to break and retreat.

Thane is on here from time to time and will likely have more to say.
