Hello folks, I've posted an overview of the Lost Battles rules on my blog as a kind of introduction to the game including a discussion of the kinds of 'game decisions' you get to make as a player. The post is here if you are interested in reading it: link It's fairly long unfortunately, but I hope that it will give people who may be interested in it a chance to see what the game involves. I'd post it on here directly, but it would make for a forbidding wall of text! Cheers, Aaron |

I went ahead and bought Strategos II since I figured it would explain the rules AND have them in a more accessible booklet. I have Lost Battles but it can be an issue wading through it to find all the rules easily. Thanks, John |

Hope the overview is useful, gents. Strategos II is not too different from Lost Battles, John. From memory there might be a few tweaks to the combat modifiers and the way victory points are done has changed slightly, but it still does the job. I always harp on about it, but the cheat sheet for Strategos II on the yahoo group really makes things easier. It's by the fellows in the Durham wargames group, and is here if you want to download it, though I think you need to be a member to do so: link Cheers, Aaron |

By the way remember to go to the lost battles yahoo group to get the latest changes! The command point system has been changed a bit, now you roll the dice when you have only standard (the one issued based on the current army value) left. Arrigo |

The command point system has been changed a bit, now you roll the dice when you have only standard (the one issued based on the current army value) left. I thought that was an optional change? I still play the old way. Tally up the points and spend them as you like. |

I really like this game/simulation. I have made a 2mm travel set using Irregular 2mm blocks and 20mm wide bases. The game does look better with larger figures though. The 2mm really are just for travel as they are so compact. |

acarhj, this is the way professor Sabin plays at con and uses the game in class, I am only his underlining but from what I have seen he is quite the way he wants it to work. Have to ask the day after tomorrow what version of the command roll will be in the boxed edition. Anyway the change appeared after a play between and friend on one side and Charles Vasey. Charles, after having been througly smashed by Xhimin was quite uhappy with the predictabilty of the system (actually it was Xhimin rolling almost always 12 and covering my almost crazy initial charge, let phrase it this way
I was Alex and she the prettiest Parmenio I have ever seen and Issus had been won by Parmenio not by Alexander while Darius was saying "those dice are not good"). Anyway Charles was pointing that knowing perfectly the amount of points allowed the player to plna in advance the entire turn as an accountant. I think it was in reference ot the move when I used the minimum point to pull back the battered and lucky Alex and then left every point for the bonus of the big attack made by Xhimin. With the new system you hav e to decide what you really want and then hope for a good die roll. It makes sense. |

Hi Dave, 2mm games can look very impressive. I have a mate who is putting together a scenario for Caesar at Alexandria using the Classical version of Simon MacDowell's Comitatus set. Judging by the work in progress photos it's going to look very very good indeed! I was tempted myself, but I don't know how on earth I'd go about painting the things! Arrigo – that's an interesting story about the genesis of the Vasey rule. I don't use it myself as I'm so used to the old way and I prefer it for solo games. The Vasey variant does add a new dimension to your planning though, so I imagine it would add a lot of extra interest to games with an opponent. Cheers, Aaron |
