Beautiful. Do you do any tweaking to the rules for WOTR or just straight out of the book?

I just bought these rules and love them. They seem to represent the ultimate merge of WAB and Warmaster, while staying in the single-figure paradigm (unlike Hail Caesar which moved to a units-based approach). I love the various rules differentiating troop types and the command tests that apply and when.

The game plays fine without any tweaking to the basic rules. We do however encourage players to organise their armies into 3 divisions each under a leading noble. These divisions can only use the morale level and benefit from strategy points of its own noble.

The Tonman Ditch that extended round the medieval town of St Albans was a significant obstacle. So much so, that the only practical places where the town could be attacked from the east were the "bars" where the roads into the town crossed the ditch. Of course the problem then was that the Yorkists could not concentrate enough troops in the narrow roads in order to break through at the bars.

It was to break this impasse that Warwixk scouted and subsequently exploited the fact that the ditch and palisade between the bars at Shropshire Lane and Sopwell Lane was undefended. Warwick broke into the town by crossing the undefended ditch, breaking into the town (literally through the walls of the houses) and attacking the Lancastrians in the rear. The whole battle was over in little more than half an hour.

War and Conquest provides a great game whether I am playing a War of the Roses or an ancient battle. It does this in a logical and straightforward way – the game just makes sense.

IMHO a reasonable working knowledge of your chosen historical period is the key to being able to use the same rule set across different periods. Players just need to apply their knowledge to the game being played.

Ancient rules do seem to work well for WOTR. I have successfully used both Hail Caesar and DBA v3

I asked for more detail because I am simultaneously reading HC, WaC, WAB 2.0, and AoA. I play DBx for ancients/medievals in 15mm, but have a large fantasy collection in 28mm and want a ruleset for ancients/medieval in 28mm that is roughly compatible with Warhammer Fantasy Battles, so I don't have to embark on a massive rebasing project.

Rob Broom is in the early stages of drafting War and Sorcery as a modification of WaC, and HC has a fantasy variant out there, and a fantasy system like Armies of Arcana or even Piquet's Hostile Realms could be used for historical armies, especially if it is Romans versus High Elves, or Arthurians versus Dwarves or Orcs.

Its easy to "rebase" Warhammer figures for DBX (we use DBA 3.0 and HOTT Big Battle combined). Three foot figures mounted on 20mm bases can be put on a 60mm base. Two mounted on 25mmX50mm bases can be put on a 60mmX50mm base. Instant DBA basing. (Technically DBA 3.0 only allows 45mm depth for Mounted but only a techno-rule junky will notice/object).
