Just about what it says in the question…. Just painting up some thureophoroi (which will be protected off spear and planning to base as medium foot) and thorakitai – opinions valued from anyone who's used them as to whether they are better used as medium or heavy foot (as either is an option) before I start basing them!!
Thanks
Phil

Depends on the rest of the army. Do you have a need for MF not provided elsewhere?

I would base as HF and have sabot bases ready to convert to MF when needed

I went with MF for Bactrian Greek and Hellenistic Greek armies. Mainly b/c I have pikes or regular hopites for use as HF already. Don't have the Rb to hand but I thought the thorakitai were mainly armored MF.

They can be MF or HF …. that's the point of the question.

Personally I like them as HF, as they are useful in gaps between pike blocks to extend the line.

Thanks MM, was steering thoughts on your lines already. The idea of a sabot has merit, though a 0.5cm deep one is likely to be a bit of a fiddle… of course I could always build both but life's too short for total completeness ;-)

How about this as an idea – base them as a mix of 3s and 4s on the 40mm x 15mm bases and make up some 10mm spacers for when using them as MF?

That assumes a two-deep formation – you might want to make up some 15mm deep spacers for if you shift to 3-deep

Personally, I find them much more useful as MF as they can dominate terrain against most other MF, especially if they can withstand the charge of impact foot- the IF are then doomed.

As far as I can tell there's nothing fundamentally wrong with having heavies based on 40mm by 20mm bases as long as there are 4 figures per base.
