I am usually an Armati player but recently picked up Tactica with a view to play 100YW battles.

The army lists suggest some 7 battles each of 16 mounted knights for the French though!

Going to take me a while at 28mm to build those forces. Does anyone play with scaled down forces and do the rules still work at all?

I don't see why it wouldn't work. Just adjust the morale check thresholds for each unit according to its starting strength. Each unit would be more brittle than if they were at full strength.

Thanks for the tip, I really like the rules and I am eager to get them going.I am a big fan of Arty Conliffe's other sets and feel that they would work also.

I have always liked the fighting value concept Arty used in Tactica, but would have liked to have seen more categories by the use of D8's or D10's.

You can always just use one rank instead of two, and keep track of the casualties on a roster.

Or, just give each one-rank unit a die to mark casualties.

HUGE is the only way to play Tactica, isn't it?

I was a WRG player when it came out. The "suggested" armies were 2 or 3 times the size of my already large armies.
It seemed like it was designed for those who already had huge armies.
The rules to me were not interesting enough to vastly expand what I already had.
It also seemed that as soon as you deployed, one could look at the table and see who would win. "Black to mate in 3".

"… morale check thresholds …" Is that a built-in mechanic to force larger armies?

Why not just assign a 25% casualty morale test on all units and call it good?…

altering the Morale check threshold seems the way to go.

Years ago my buddies and I created a system for playing Tactica with half size units. If you contact me at Burker1 (at) aol (dot) com I'd be happy to send it to you. It's only one page long.
