In the past I have used CCA for Roman Era conflicts--Rome v. the usual suspects--and I have been very happy with the results.

I would like to use CCA for warfare during the classical period--Greek city-states and the campaignes of Alexander.

My question is this…

Does CCA count pike and spear armed troops as standard vanilla HI or are there special rules to take into account the strengths and weaknesses of the hoplite and phalanx?

Thank you in advance to all who reply!

Pikes are usually HI. There is a special category for Hoplites – called Medium Hoplites. There are no special rules about pikes that I am aware of. Personally, I think most minaitures rules over rate pikes.

I simply think of HI as 1st class close-order foot and MI as 2nd class, similiar but not quite as good. At Gaugamela I think it reasonable to class Alexender's pikes as HI and his 2nd line allied hoplites as MI.

There are some optional rules regarding pikes. Have a look on the ccancients.net site linked in the preceding post and look under Phalanx in the variants section. The whole site is an amazing resource.

As above, the special rules for hoplites etc are on the cca website.

I give pikes a re-roll on sword hits, that only strike on color symbol not swords , it's not much really but puts a "kink" into sarrissas
