I'm getting old waiting for C&C:Fantasy (or whatever it will be called). Mr. Borg says it's lots of fun, and I'm sure he's right, but it doesn't look like it's going to be published in my lifetime. :-) Has anyone adapted C&C:Ancients for use with fantasy miniatures? If so, would you be willing to share what's worked? I'm pretty sure I'd want some longer range bowfire, since I picture longbows rather than the short bows they had in the Ancients period. There certainly might be some unforseen side effects of introducing that into the game. Most other troops seem to have a good analog in C&C:A already. I guess elephants aren't necessarily a good fit for all monsters, since not all monsters would rampage, but you could certainly use them as the starting point. Thoughts? Experiences? |

As soon as I get my hands on C&C I will start working on just that. I want to use the GW undeads I collect to fight the SO's Dark Elves and this way I might not have to use WH! |

I think to represent medieval era massed bowmen, you could use the stats for auxilia, but change their ranged fire option to 3 hexes with 3 dice if they don't move. Personally, while I understand why it was done the way it was, I think the missile range in the basic game is overdone. I would think that having your javelin-s be able to declare missile fire at range 1 (i.e. making them immune from battle back) and giving the bows and slings a 2 hex range would have been more appropriate to the scale of the board. I've recently played a game using a couple of my 15mm Hordes of the Things armies. A human medieval army vs. a goblin army. The goblins had 9 warbands (warrior infantry), 6 wolf riders (medium cavalry), 2 bows (modified auxilia, as above), a unit of giant ogres (elephant), and 1 leader. The humans had 6 spears (medium infantry), 4 bows (modified auxilia, as above), 4 medium cavalry, 3 heavy cavalry, and 1 leader. We played to 6 banners. The goblins got the early lead and were up 3-0, but the humans came back and eventually there were several turns at 5-5. Finally, the humans got a big push in the center from a double time card and took out a unit of wolf riders to win the battle. It was a lot of fun. |

Some friends and I have been playing fantasy games, using a modified version of the C&C Ancients rules. We've deliberately stayed very close to the standard C&C rules. Some of the additions we've made have been the introduction of Mages, who we represent as 2 stand HI, but with a range of 7 and rolling 2 dice, as LI would. We also have rules covering flyers (similar to LC), and some specialist elements with rules for them alone. We use a lot of dinosaurs (=elephants). On Saturday we are demo-ing our game at a convention called Continuum in Leicester. The game will be for 8 players, with something over 800 superb 28mm minis on the 12' long table! Many of the minis are themed to Glorantha, the world in which Runequest was set (some may recall broo and duck warriors). Specialist models will include my Crimson Bat, which has a wingspan of over 24", and a friend's dwarf mine terrain piece, which has to be seen to be believed. It's titanic. I'll post a link to some pics, late next week. Simon |

Ancient bows had just as long a range as longbows; almost all ancient bows were of composite construction, with as strong a pull and long a range as a longbow. |
