Commands and Colors Ancients is a war game with scenarios from the struggle between Rome and Carthage. You need solid tactics and a bit of luck to win this game. link |

A fair review of the game. Thanks for taking the time to post! |

I'll agree that you need luck for this game. I'd disagree that tactics has much to do with it. Still, it was better than CCN. |

" I'd disagree that tactics has much to do with it. " Use of Generals and cycling the card deck to suit the strengths of your army? |

Yes, good review, thanks! I also agree that tactics are more important than they first appear, and that better tactics / more skillful play will usually win the day when match playing a scenario from both sides and tallying the banner scores. There's a keen online community too for those who want to try online play: link I'd even recommend joining the group just to look at the game files which will give doubters a good appreciation for how much skill is needed to play well and win consistently. Cheers, Aaron |

Good review. I too find Bill's assertion about a want for tactics uncompelling. I use at least 20 different tactics during play. Check the forums at CCancinets.net or BGG for discussions of the game's tactics, using miniatures and other lively discussions. link link |

I have played in several CnC Ancients games now, including 2 of these link
luck plays a big part because you need to get the appropriate cards. You use them to make crucial tactical manoeuvres. At least that was how the Romans won against the Parthians. So
grasp the tactics (game ones and historical ones), get the cards to execute them
roll the right dice. I would think it is the kind of game where it would be quite difficult to win without using tactics in combination with the luck of the cards and dice. Phil |
