"Byzantines vs Fatimids: A To the Strongest! AAR" Topic

We recently had another game of To the Strongest! at club. This time I had made a dedicated grid, and we also used BigRedBat's excellent chits which made for a visually more pleasing game than the last one.

Here the Byzantine Empire clashes with the Fatimid Caliphate in Syria, some time around 1000 AD.

It was great fun despite some beginner mistakes, and we'll definitely pay more To the Strongest! in the future. For a full AAR plus many pictures and some general thoughts about the game, head over to Hook Island!

I wouldn't want to tackle Byzzies with Fatimids. Not now. Not ever. Byzzies are the toughest troops in the then-known world. They lost their empire through "death by a thousand cuts", mostly political intrigues weakening at the top, then economic troubles, then civil wars, finally, invasion/betrayal from within. Battlefield losses were far fewer than victories. I'm not aware of a single battle that the Byzantines lost against Egyptians. But then, I can't actively recall a single battle either, so that doesn't mean much after my foregoing blather! ;)

As for Byzantines vs Fatimids: I guess this game reflected the historical realities then, as the Caliphate did lose. It was a close call though and things weren't decided until the last few turns.
