Thank you for introducing me to a new and interesting period.

Th Dawn of Eastern Europe is very intresting.
Pity we know so little about it !.
First – Vikings taking Novogrod and creating the Russ, then Bohemia, Poland, Expansion of Holy Roman Empire in to lands of Weneds (Berlin is located in place of old west Slav capital)wars of Empire with Poland and Magyars.
Thenbreaking up of Poland into small princedoms in XII century (we have for 150 years what is present in all fantasy settings – warring border princes :>
And then to add a cherry on the cake – Teutonic order + eastern crusades and Mongol conquest in Russ, Poland and Hungary in 1241 !

There are much more action than in the west at the time.
Only problem is that there are not many sources and synthesis outside of eastern slavic languages.

All in all i highly recommend it (or Polish history at later dates too, in dusk of medieval with great wars against Teutonic order – with one of greatest battles of the time Tanenberg in 1410, and then Polish rise to greatness in XV century and Polish Imperial period in XVI to later XVII with Hussars – winged lancers, and evil Swedes and Turks with battles like Kircholm and Kłuszyn and taking Moscow for few years with battle of Wienna as victory to end an era! (all with beautiful 15 miniatures from Wargammer) :)

"Pity we know so little about it !."

Very true but reading Peter Heather's Migrations and Empires is well worth it if you want to know more.

Nice figs btw.

Well, as Polish citizen i know a lot more than most of the non Poles :), but there are lacks of knowledge in the field. I have works of Paweł Jasiennica and Zofia Kossakówka (and many many others in Polish), but there is serious lack in historical sources on the period.

For example there is one debated ruler of Poland from around 1025-1030 , who is not counted in official lists but could rule for few years, and just not be listed in any chronicles of the period, but some contexts sources point to such possibility (so called Boleslaw the Forgotten – i kid you not : )

Nice bit of painting.

Also nice to get a bit more Eastern European history out (I am a third generation Slovene-American, so I developed an interest in Eastern and South Central European history).

P.S. Now if you wish to speak of a lack of historical sources go back to the Balkans in the 6th to 10th centuries.

Poland is in similar situation, Russ is better but only a little (and source is from later period)
Eastern European history until adoption of Christianity (and writing culture with it) is unfortunately non existant..

We just dont know what happened there since Goths till 966

;(
