Looking for some allies for my Late Romans and having gained a couple of Irregular Miniature Goths (6mm) in an eBay sale some time ago I thought to expand these by a few figures. Looking in the DBMM army lists I was surprised to find in the Goths lists the infantry are psiloi but in the Late Roman list they are warband and without cavalry. Totally confused! Which, if any, is correct? |

Goths of all flavors should have Wb I would think. That certainly is the case with DBA. I think the Ostrogoths would have a larger portion of Psiloi, fewer Wb and more mounted than the Visigoths. Are sure yo aren't looking at only a base list and there isn't another part that adds more depending on the side of Europe they live? |

It depends which ofthe Goth armies. I recall that there are three or four. I have big doubts about Goths as Warband after the 4th century.they are more like spear with a bow component. If you were modelling Cniva,s army of 250 AD Warband might be more appropriate. Similarly in Kniva's time thebcavalrybare more like Early German cavalry, later than 400 AD they are knights in DB terms. |

In DBMM there are three main gothic tribes, Visigoths, Ostrogoths and Gepids and infantry is classed as warband, psiloi or bowmen. The later the period, the more cavalry and less infantry they field. Check the army lists to see the differences (Ostrogoths in Italy are in the third period book). When in roman service, the LIR list provided two possible interpretation for the gothic infantry, that they fought in native style as Wb, or were equipped and trained as the romans. The gothic cavalry keep the Kn classment, but is supposed to be more disciplined, hence the regular status. Later, in the list called Patrician, Goths appears also as allied contingent lead by their king (as in the 394AD campaign against Arbogast, when Goths lead by Alaric were used as expendable shock troops by Theodosius). So basically the Goths can be differently classified by the period or if they fight independently or for the Romans. |

Goths of all flavors should have Wb I would think. The Early Ostrogoth list doesn't have any Wb except for "allied German warriors" available to Rhadagaisus's horde. I'm guessing this may be the list sumerandaccad looked at. |

Yes, TLC it is army list 67 I was looking at. The Gepids are list 71 so that may be the warband that is in the Late Roman list. Thanks to all but especially Lorenzo as that clears it up somewhat. I saw the knight classification and it was what I was expecting but the early Goths list had the foot as bow psiloi and to jump to warband was a bit of a leap!. |
