Looking to buy a nice flocked mat, if anything is available. Thanks.

Monday Knight Productions make them in a variety of styles:

They have greatly reduced their offerings. The smallest seems to be 3X3 unless I am missing something.

If it doesn't have to be a mat, Home Depot has precut 2X2 MDF boards. Paint brown. Flock. Done. I did the same with 2X2 plywood. The MDF seems to not warp as easily.

Yes, I was on MKP's site before posting my question. I may check on what Home Depot has to offer. Thanks.

You can also get 2' x 2' Masonite (cut down from 8' x 4') at Lowe's. I just had them cut a sheet into four 2' x 4' strips a couple of weeks ago. Only cost me the price of the sheet.

But if you are willing to wait until Bayou Wars, I have 2' x 2' piece of 1/2" plywood that is already sanded and painted on one side that I can let you have for a pittance.

IIRC Big Red Bat and Deep Cut offer 24 x 24 mats in a variety of rollable or foldable materials including cloth, neoprene backed cloth and plastic.

If you have scissors you could get a 48 x 48 and make a bunch of presents for your friends.

Clay, Cigar Box Battles offers some really nice ones. Here's their link and then click on the battle matts. They make a great one for DBA/HotT. A lot of the local guys here use them. Tell them I sent you as they are both really good guys.

Slightly off-topic, but we normally play 30"x30" and I still think it should be slightly larger. I prefer 25mm games on the 48"x48" board.

I have a 30X30 mat that I bought from The Terrain Guy in AZ. Sadly, he got out of the business. These were the most durable mats I ever saw. They were heavy canvas painted and flocked in such a way that the flock did not come off. They were well shaded. Shame you can't get them anymore.

I too really like the terrain guys mats. They came cut into 2 ft.². I could sell one. What did they cost originally anybody remember?

Cigarbox makes really nice mats as well, however they don't make any that are 2 ft.². The one they do make his half desert and a half green, but each half is 30 in.² I think. I spray-painted over the desert one with green because there's only about 10% of DBA armies that are desert. They really have a fantastic selection of things other than for DBA.

Maybe somebody with more money than I have will buy one example of each of those companies that makes mats and give us a detailed comparison.

Cigarbox Battlemats also make nice throw rugs… and bath towels!

A mat sim. to what The Terrain Guy produced was pretty much what I had in mind. I don't want to spend what it would cost to buy the CB mat.

We are producing a 2x2 version of the "Grass" mat for the AdeptiCon DBA events and general sale. If it generates enough interest may produce a few other designs in this size.

Try Hobby Lobby or Jo Ann's for mounted canvas. It comes in various sizes, 2"x2" or 3"3" or larger. Price is not bad when you catch them on sale for 40% or 50% off. Get some cheap flat brown or green paint and you have your gaming boards.

Hankedley, Those look great….

How stiff are they?

I have found the CB mats to be a little too limp for DBA because of the need to rotate the mat after terrain set up.

Most of my mats are duck cloth from Joannes which is cheap and easy to paint and stiff enough to rotate.

KATCH2221 Feb 2016 7:37 p.m. PST

Dervel, The mats Hank is providing for the Adepticon DBA tournament, (and for sale at $25 USD each) are made of thin 'mousepad' like material. They have a high res grassland printed surface. It rolls up easily for transport/storage, and comes with a zippered carrying case. I have seen the prototypes, and am impressed. Very much looking forward to picking mine up at the convention. I hope that the future will see a desert/arid print version made, as it would be excellent for biblical games of DBA.

Regards,
Jim

Thanks KATCH22,

I have seen similar printed mats in larger sizes…

If it is the same material, it should be excellent for a DBA playing surface! They roll up nicely and don't wrinkle.

Just played on the new Adepticon 2x2 DBA mats and it was awesome. The mat is very easy to rotate. As soon as I can figure out how to post pictures I will get some up. At only $25.00 USD they are awesome. Also it comes with an excellent carry case.

These look very nice. Glad I ordered one, sight unseen :)

Who makes that green (or is it yellow) measuring template?

By the way, does that top army have 14 elements? Or is it Theban, with two 8Sp in the middle?

tribunemike15 Mar 2016 7:44 a.m. PST

I was playing Thebans with 2 8Sp elements vs. Polybian Romans

tribunemike15 Mar 2016 8:50 a.m. PST

OH – and the green template is from Litko. It was part of the old DBA 2.2 set but it is in 40mm base widths so still useful.

coopman16 Mar 2016 3:07 p.m. PST

I just received my Gorgon Studios DBA mat and am very happy with it. A nice, quality product. It comes with a nice zippered cloth case with straps.
