Hi,

Got in a test game last night for the new project. Armies still very much in progress, so lots of empty bases, but at least a bit of eye candy, and some reflections on how the game works for hoplite combat.

Looking good, fmb.

Thanks for sharing FMB.

I have IMPETUS and a couple of Extra Impetus books. I've tried a couple of educational games, but don't seem to be able to get the hang of it. Oh well, there's always tomorrow!

Enjoy your Impetus reports. My son really likes this era – in a 300 and a 500 pt Spartan and an Athenian Army, 4th Century-ish, approx. how many FP, FL and S bases are there -looks like one cav base of LC? Trying to figure out how many boxes of Victrix or Warlord figs I might need to buy.
Have not yet ordered this supplement – usually do late Medieval.

In my 300 point spartan list, there's 3 large hoplite units (6 bases), 2 peltasts, 1 cavalry, and 3 skirmishers. At 500, add another couple of large hoplites, peltasts, skirmisher, and another cavalry. EI4 is actually quite good, as it covers greece vs. persia through the mid republic. Worth it, in my opinion.

FMB,

How long did the game take to play? Do you have any house rules that you use? I ask because I've read a number of reviews of the rules and some folks tweak things here and there.

I have EI Number IV as well, and agree that it's full of information.

Chis,

Maybe a couple hours? And that's with a new player. My sense is with two people who know the rules, you can easily resolve a 500 point game in an evening.

In terms of house rules, we've limited point blank shooting to the ZoC (i.e., must be directly forward) as it eliminates a gamey stunt you can pull with skirmishers where they oblique, and if correctly positioned, can shoot PB without triggering a reaction. Otherwise, we go by core rules.

Thank you! By chance I saw a copy of Impetus 4 at my FLGS. Picked it up. Great stuff – don't know why I waited so long on this one as I got the others in really short order.

Will do a 300 pt Spartan and an Athenian then later combine them and get a 500pt Persian to fight against too.

Like your PB modification – will incorporate it in my games.

Happy to help Brucka :) Are you running a blog, or some other sort of show and tell? I'd love to see this project play out at 28mm.

No blog. Bohemund on this site (Brent O.) from Minneapolis has a blog. We try to get together once or twice a year for a gaming weekend. This year it will be July 6th in Madison Wisconsin – anyone is welcome. We have people come down from Canada for this – lot of fun. Hopefully this year we will remember to take pictures and do a write up!! [Dark Ages and Medieval [Burgundian] mostly].
I am finishing up my son's WH Fantasy wood elves so wanted him to start some historicals as he reads Greek Mythology (sort of – Percy Jackson) and plays 'Hellenes' and 'Commands and Colors' with me. (He's 10). He likes Sparta – so can do this inexpensively in plastic. I thought this was a good opportunity to do some Ancients. {His name is Alexander -so thought it a good start for him].

Sounds good! My boy's 7, but is starting to express an interest. I'll have to look up Bohemond's blog for pics of the big game. I have to admit, the newer plastics in 28mm have me more than a little intrigued, but time and space make me choose 15mm. Luckily, there's some nice figs in that scale as well.

Nice job. Hang in there and get those models done… it's well worth it, imo. :)
