Hi,

I'm looking at having a go at Impetus and wondered if you could play the full rules using only the basic army lists or if you need to go for the full 300 point battle size to start?

Thanks

Nick

At the smaller army lists you will probably only have the one command, but otherhwise I would have thought it was quite playable.

Was looking at Impetus myself. Does one know where in the USA to pick the rules up?

You might try The Last Square in Madison, WI. I think there is a place very near you as well . . . On Military Matters, I think?

An old thread here with some suggestions on using the basic lists with Impetus.

On Military Matters in NJ sells them.

I did not think OMM had them. Been to the brick and mortar store as well as had a look online and must have missed them. Will give them a call. Thanks all.

Scale Creep sells them too looked like he is out of stock on the rule book though.

Major Tom & Advocate – thanks.

I'll have a go using the full list stats but fielding a small force on each side for the play through based on the basic list composition.

I've played games with less points than 300 many times. They play fine, and will allow a conclusion in a reasonable time as you learn the rules.

Less than 300 point games also help if playing with 28mm figures on a smaller table.

Your timing Nick B is impeccable. There is discussion on the Impetus Forum about this very topic so you're not the only one wondering about this.

Taking a look at the BI list for the Macedonians I point it out around 190 points in Impetus and with command around 240 points. So you're not that far off from 300 point anyway. The lower the point total the more the dice impact the game (although at 900 points dice still have considerable sway.) One of the big challenges in Impetus is that the system is impossible to "game." Knights will generally overrun light/medium infantry but not always. Impetus is a game of luck and skill, more akin to backgammon than chess. We like it, in part, because it reduces the ego part of the game a lot while still being intellectually interesting.
