I bought these lovely minis from David Imrie, recently, and have re-based for my own collection. More about them, here:-

Simon,

Grand job of basing.

52 units? Do you have a list of units somewhere at your blog?

Cheers,
Robert

Those are some fantastically painted figures and lovely sculpts. David Imrie is very talented, and a nice guy.

I like how you have re-based the figures. Very good.

Hi Capn; yes a top chap! I think these were painted by a friend of his.

Robert, I keep a spreadsheet. But if I manage to hit the 52 units, I shall produce the list. They have been mostly Caesarian and Early Imperial Romans and Successors.

Great looking unit there. Very characterful!

Those are great looking and you turned them into a beautiful diorama for Impetus, outstanding!

Simon, just 52 units? Nice basing and figures! Cheers Mike

Thanks chaps!

Marcus, I've only played Impetus once, and although I quite liked it, one of my mates didn't take to the rules. It's more likely I'll use them with the set I'm developing. Aesthetically, though, I really like the freedom that the single larger base and reduced number of miniatures offers when basing minis.

Marcus Brutus01 Dec 2013 6:10 a.m. PST

I'd encourage your friend Simon to play them a few more times. I took all of us in my group many games to finally come to terms with some of the concepts in Impetus. But I can say, having played over 100 games, that every game gives an interesting and unpredictable presentation of the challenges of command. Impetus is always intellectually interesting and never boring.

I agree that the basing is a real bonus and probably could be used effectively in other rules sets.

Hi Marcus, it's not unlikely that I'll have a crack at Impetus, at some stage. After all, I'll have an army, soon…

Outstanding figures, painting and basing. Those are the complete package.

Fantastic looking unit. Base is very realistic. Good soil colour.

I see you used 12 instead of more commonly seen 10. Very effective This unit is shinning example of why I find the whole Impetus thing so appealing.

Delbruck01 Dec 2013 5:26 p.m. PST

I think I am a convert. I just started painting 25/28mm again and I think I will base them mostly on 120 x 60mm bases, usable for Impetus, Hail Caesar, big base DBA, and others.

You have a great blog. Very inspiring.

BTW, that is the best mud I have ever seen.

Thanks chaps!

With the smaller 28s, a dozen minis feels about right. I'm going with 4 skirmishers, and 5 or 6 heavy cavalry.

Cheers, Simon

Your basing arrangements are getting better all the time! Well done

Thanks Simon… I'll bring them along to show you, when we meet!

Emperorbaz04 Dec 2013 11:24 a.m. PST

I like the basing Simon, but a word of caution. Larger mdf bases are prone to warping, and second, for some reason I haven't quite worked out, there is a greater likelihood of the figures coming free from the bases (not that I think your special formula Bigredbat Guano can cope!)

Personal logo BigRedBat Sponsoring Member of TMP04 Dec 2013 11:39 a.m. PST

Hi Barry,

The bases aren't mdf, but card. I am supremely confident that they won't warp, as I have based 4,400 minis to the same system, often on 120mm wide bases. :-)

Essentially my Guano basing compound sets like concrete, and locks the minis into place. Once set, the card could almost be removed as redundant, but is still useful as it provides something that the base can be picked up by, at the edges.

I suspect that I could make a base up to 150mm square, or even larger, that wouldn't warp. Might even try that…

Cheers, Simon

Emperorbaz04 Dec 2013 1:01 p.m. PST

Nice Simon. Just re-read your blog page on your basing, it must be very time consuming, but worth the work if it avoids problems. I'm forever rebasing, not because of issues, but more because I change my mind! I'm getting lazy, I used to cut my own mdf, now I go to Warbases for greater accuracy, I couldn't bear the idea of cutting the card bases by hand.

Hi Barry, applying the gunk takes no time at all. Cutting the bases isn't too bad, either. I do 3-4 batches a year, takes a couple of hours a go. No one sells a thin, magnetic base (as far as I know).

The time goes on all the accursed tufting! I can do a maximum of 2 units in an evening.

smacdowall04 Dec 2013 4:58 p.m. PST

Try using a rotary blade cutter as used by quilters. It makes the job very easy indeed. They are fairly easy to come by either in craft shops or online from places such as rotarycuttershop.co.uk

So do they work like a pizza cutter, Simon? Haven't come across them…

smacdowall05 Dec 2013 7:27 a.m. PST

yes, just like a pizza cutter and just the thing for easily cutting card and keeping the lines straight
