I've heard that someone somewhere has developed some Evade rules for Basic Impetus, but I don't have any further info on that subject. That is something I would love to add to my BI rules because I feel it's something that is sorely needed. I'd appreciate it if anyone could point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance.grin

Just do a half move +1d3 or 1d6. 1 evade per turn only.

The right direction?

Upgrade to Impetus!

I've never actually played Basic Impetus but I did bookmark a discussion about adding evasion just in case I ever do. (I'm pretty sure that this link was posted by a TMP member but I'm afraid I can't remember who it is):

You certainly don't need to upgrade to Impetus but I definitely think an evade module is needed in the basic game. The variable half move suggested is pretty much how I do it for medieval games.

You can find my evade rule for Basic Impetus here: link

We have been using this rule in our Ancient Campaign based on the SOA publication "Empire", using the map etc for movement but fighting the battles using BI (augmented) We did it first strictly according to BI and now a second time using evasion plus better army lists from Impetus Extra 4. You can see how things are going in our second rerun here: link

Both these pages are on the new Impetus Forum. There isn't much about BI here, though – better is the old Forum here: link though there is an excellent set of video tutorials for BI on Youtube such as here: YouTube link

You have to remember that evasion was the norm for horse archers and skirmishers in the face of an attack so it shouldn't be anything difficult for them or penalised in any way.

When we first played Basic Impetus, there was a frantic rustling back and forth through the rules the first time light troops needed to evade. And then a gulp. :-)

Definitely need this rule, first time I played, using a Mongol Army, I did the "big gulp" thing as well. When two thirds of your army is light bow armed cavalry, with no impetus value, you are in big trouble if a bunch of nasty big men in armour and riding heavy horses decide to have a go at you. Apart from that, it's a great game. I have the full rule set now, so just use the evade rules from there when playing Basic Impetus.
I have to say though that I am thinking Sword and Spear may be the goto fun rules for this period.
