Just wanted to know before I get started. Are there army builder files for this game?

Kind of found my old booklets and decided to finally paint that Carthaginian army. If there is not a file out there I will throw one together, but I do not want to duplicate work that is already done. Also, my army books are 3 volumes from 6th edition I think. Should I look for a more recent volume? Thanks in advance.

Warrior has its own army list volumes.

This remains my favorite ancients ruleset. I have quite a few lists but I dont' know of an army builder like the one for FOG.

If you need help with a particular army list, I can probably help.

I like these rules too. I am in the midst of a time warp and dusting off some old favorites to play again. I will try and find the warrior army list books. I just like having an army builder data file to organize and print out lists, although I just realized how many armies there are to input data for. The lists are fairly simple though and once the structure is done I should be able to add them in little time.

Not sure why, but DBA has never inspired me beyond a test game or 2, while WRG 7 kept my interest.

I always used a spreadsheet and the booklets.

WRG 7th had I think 3, maybe 4 list books – they are different from the 6th edition ones.

Warrior also has list books of its own – two of them are available for free download here

(the biblical and dark age ones)

FOG has an army builder?

The warrior (WRG 7th) rules have lists that are very comprehensive if a little complicated and fussy.
FOG has it's own army generator found in the downloads section of the Slitherine website

The WRG 6th Edition lists were carried over to 7th. While additional list books did come out for 7th, they were very much disputed to as to accuracy. I still have all the list books including 6th, 7th and Warrior lists.

Warrior did release new army books. And again, there were some bones to pick regarding accuracy and that the Asian lists in particular were overly point efficient (Chinese armies had option to have 2nd rank shieldless). I like a lot of what Warrior did but have a few bones to pick including:

1. Crossbow firing with same amount of figures as bow units. Their rate of fire was LESS historically. The rate of fire in the rules is now HIGHER than longbow which is ahistorical.

2. The aforementioned list changes. Essentially, the Chinese lists and the Medieval Portugese with the Almughavars. All of a sudden Almughavars are allowed shields. Also, the shield can disappear in the second rank with many if not all Chinese armies which was not historically accurate and made the Han list in particular VERY point efficient.

We stopped playing here in San Antonio due to some of the issues above and the fact that input was shut down for detractors of the changes. Play balance was altered with some of the changes made too.

The good was that many armies were improved based on list specific rules. Early Imperial Roman is a prime example. With the Fulcrum formation being allowed. Essentially Roman Legionaries now have a 'chance' against mounted opponents, etc. While some lists had problems, many more lists became better historically and the good news was that some armies actually became somewhat competitive; which was a nice change over 7th Edition.

Another reason we abbandoned the rules is that tactical movement and shooting was really too powerful. The crossbow rule changes certainly added to the problem. While we loved a lot of the mechanics of the system, objectively, most felt that it had gone too much in one direction. While many of us had gotten well versed with the system and were successful, it became obvious that changes had gone too far for many of us.

I do play FoG now. I am nowhere near as competitive with FoG as I was with WRG 7th or Warrior. But, I do find the game to have a better feel for ancients. Am I totally satisfied with FoG? No, but I do feel it simulates things on in a more believable fashion. And FoG does have similar mechanics in that movement and charges are separated, weapons work differently in the first round of combat than they do in later rounds, figures are in "units", etc.
