I am trying to decide how to base cavalry so I can use it with Terry Gore's Medieval Warfare rules. I've done infantry on 40mm square bases ( the "Foundry" way), but the cavalry bases clearly need to be bigger. The rules say 40mm by 50mm (depth). Has anyone managed to get 3 figures on this size? [This represents Close Order and Trained Loose Order cavalry - Irregular Loose Order don't have a figures per stand mentioned but I'd guess 2]. I think I will have to go for 50mm wide bases for cavalry (I ain't going to rebase the infantry). Any comments or thoughts?

This will not help much but I am using Front Rank medieval cavalry and had to use base size of 50 x 50 to get two mounted figs to a stand could of possibly trimmed to 45mm if staggered slightly, good luck if using latest figs in getting three to above base size!

You should post this question to the SAGA Yahoo site for Ancient and Medieval Warfare. Do a search for SAGA Publishing and you will see the Yahoo lists on the left hand column of the Home page. I am doing mine on 80mm frontages for both infantry and cavalry. If somebody doesn't like it, they can bite me !!! :)

I would post it to Yahoo but I don't like the impertinent questions you have to answer. I have looked there for answers already, and they just aren't there. Whilst I like the look of the rules enough to want to use them, there are gaps in some places. I think I'm going to try using 50mm square bases for Cavalry and 40mm for infantry. If that fails I'll be rebasing my infantry.

We normally use WRG basing as most of us have our armies based for that system already. I really have had no problems basing my own cavalry 3/stand on 60mm wide bases (Large Bases in the rules). Foot are also on 60mm stands.
Again, we use this basing as most of our players are 'old' WRG or DBM converts. Many new WAB converts are using those armies with no problems either. When playing against an opponent with different sized bases, simply place a piece of cardstock under the smaller based stands so that they are now the same physical size as the larger ones.

I'm curious about the problem with yahoo. We have over 525 group members on the GoreAMwar rules group. Email me personally if you have problems getting on. tlgore@frontiernet.net

I mount everything for WAB. For element games I use an 80mm frontage. I guess this doesn't allow me to play DBx (shucks! darn!) I have used it with Medieval Warfare with no problems.

One hardly notices any effects even when fighting elements on a 60mm frontage. I guess, theoretically, it might have an impact on wheeling, but since wheels are limited to 45 degrees, it's not all that dramatic.

Zarquon is on the money. I base everything on WAB bases. DBA 80mm frontage, Armati on 80mm frontage,Days of knights on 40mm square for infantry and cav on 80mm frontage. It works for me.
