Well, work and little children have slowed me down but not stopped me. I have finished my battle report of Heraclea using Migamex Ancient Warfare rules. It was on a 2'x2' board like my previous Heraclea replays so did not do them enough justice, but a good outing was had. As per my other replays, the report is quite detailed so that anyone interested in the rules knows what they are in for. The battlereport blog post is here: link For those unfamiliar with the Milgamex Ancient Warfare rules, here is a link to my overview: link The rules are fun despite being 35 years old. |

Interesting. I read the Battle report and your overview thoughts. It seems like you had some hoops to jump through to convert to stands rather than using individually based figs. I know you enjoyed the rules. I guess what I'm curious about is based on all the variety of Ancient sets available today do you think any other folks might do the same as you and try them out? It just seems like there are several obstacles to overcome to actually play the rules that wouldn't be present in more current sets. Oh, I appreciated seeing those Heritage 15mm figs in battle. I have a Republican Roman and Carthaginian army of them painted many years ago. I am still fond of those figs. Thanks, John |

Generalising a lot, there seems to be two main types so current rulesets – those aimed for 15mm elements aka WRG 7th/DBM basing (FOG, DBMM, DBA) and single 28mm figures (Hail Caesar, WAB and its successors). Yes there is 6mm and some 28mm rules are sometimes unit based. Milgamex Ancient Warfare is aimed at 25mm single figures formed into units, a perfect fit for those with 28mm single figures. It you have these, Milgamex can easily be played with no issues. I only have 15mm based elements, so I find it hard occasionally to make the alternative basing rules work. But at least I have provided a way to do so in case anyone ones to try them out with element based armies. They do play very differently (in a good way) to recent rules. |

Oh, and I got the Heritage figures off ebay last year. I was wondering on the manufacturer. Thanks for identifying them. I quite like them. I go some painted, some unpainted. The unpainted are near the top of my pile to paint. |

Hi, I hope you didn't think I was denigrating your effort. It's a hobby and folks can do whatever they enjoy. I know I do. My point was the rules aren't easy to acquire and convincing folks to try a 30-40 year old set may be an issue too. I really liked the Heritage 15mm ranges for Naps, ACW and Ancients when they were released all those years ago. My ACW were stolen. I traded my 25mm painted Hinchcliffe Byzantine army for my Heritage 15mm one. About 2/3's was painted by Chris Atkin. Nice guy who I gamed with a lot. He sculpted the RSM and Rank and File figs years ago. Moved back to the UK and disappeared. Missed talking and gaming with him. Thanks, John |

No no, I did not think you were questioning me. My written style coming across very stiff. The rules do seem to come up on ebay every 6 months or so, which does not make them the rarest of rules, but pretty much so! I am not trying to convince people to try the rules, although they can if they want. I am more seeing if they are suitable fast play 2'x2' rules, and also if people hear about these rules, they can read an overview and have a detailed report to decide if they want to get them. Most of my own ancient figures are Essex, know really only them, Hincliffe and Minifigs. But I have acquired some painted armies over the years now as I never really have much interested in painting. I am entering into the world of different scuplts and slowly my knowledge and appreciation of them is going up. |

Thanks Aaron. I'm still enjoying these replays too much that they are stopping me playing Field Commander: Alexander and telling you if it is any good! |
