I want to have a dabble with ancients. I will likely have 10mm figs based to 15mm standards. I would like games to run in 2 hours or less and play on a 4 x 5 area or less. I'm not a big fan of huge lists of modifiers or roster sheets Romans and barbarians or New Kingdom and Hittites or early medieval would all interest me. I already have the Crusader rules, which look nice (but no figures yet) but wondered whether someone who has played both Impetus and crusader and is used to playing the period with othetr rules, could indicate strengths and weaknesses of both sets. Thanks in inticipation – norm |

I like both of them as alternatives to my favorite set (which is in deathwatch mode now anyway
). As a general comparison, Crusader uses more traditional mechanisms, while Impetus is more innovative. Both will meet your prerequisites for time, space, and complexity. As you already have Crusader, I would recommend getting Impetus. There is no reason you cannot play both: the basing can be quite compatible, kluging the smaller Crusader bases into the large stands for Impetus. As long as both pairs of armies are based the same (especially as you're doing 10mm, so won't run across too many others), adjusting the base sizes won't matter. If you're not ready for that step, download Basic Impetus and the pertinent lists for free and see how you like the mechanisms. They're only slightly more complex for the full ruleset, IMO, so will be an incrememntal learning experience. The two rulesets give a different feel, and that's not a bad thing. Sometimes you may feel more like one, sometimes more like the other, depending on the period. Given your army choices, I would tend to prefer Impetus for NKE and Hittites, Crusader for early medieval, and either for Romans and barbarians; but I would happily use either set for any of them. Hope that helps. Allen |

Pull down the basic impetus rules for free. dadiepiombo.com/basic2.html If you like them, you will probably like Impetus. As for Crusader, that is another fine set. I own and like them very much. I also own the Punic Wars supplement and find it to be an excellent additon to the rules. John |

Another votre for Impetus. I'm just starting to ramp up 3rd Crusade armies in 10mm for Impetus using 15mm basing. The larger number of 10mm figures that will fit on the large Impetus bases should make for a great looking set of armies. |

slightly off topic , but could someone identify the 28mm roman sculpts used on the D&P link above for impetus? I must admit after seeing the el mercenario work with the impetus bases in the last WSS i'm tempted! TIA |
