I've had a look through the various threads on Field of Glory and I can't find an answer to this question, so I'm hoping some kind soul who is familiar with these rules will be able to help me out.

The question is: Can I use armies based for Warmaster (i.e. 40x20mm) in FoG without re-basing?

I expect that, like DBx, FoG uses 40mm frontage, so I'm already thinking that I'll have to do something with my chariots and 'shock' cavalry from Warmaster, but will having a standard base depth of 20mm cause any difficulties?

I expect the answer to this will be one of the following:

1. Base depth doesn't matter at all for FoG (unlikely, I know)

2. Warmaster basing will work, but with some rules adjustments and/or prior agreement with my opponent (details of necessary adjustments would be helpful)

3. Warmaster basing just won't work or would cause major problems/re-writes to the rules (again, an explanation of why would be helpful).

Basically what I've read about these rules appeals to me and I'm thinking of investing in them, but not if it means my existing Warmaster armies will be made redundant. I don't want to re-base my armies because I don't intend to quit Warmaster, I'm just interested in FoG as an alternative ruleset.

Thanks in advance for any help with this.

I'll be using my WMA armies to give FoG a try out. No plans to rebase. The only real "problem" is with shock based troops. For mounted shock I'll just put two stands together to make one FoG base. For phalanx two stands will make two FoG bases, but there will need to be a minor fudge in that the orientation is different. I can't see it being a problem.

I'm only half way through reading FOG (damnable work gets in the way :( ), but the impression I get is option 2 is true. Funnily enough I'd just been wondering the same thing last night as I'd been tidying up the basing on one of my Warmaster armies.

For Warmaster shock troops on narrow bases you'd have to use one stand on a 40mm wide sabot base, or even 2 stands to make it look better. Leaders might also need a rectangular sabot base (40mm wide) if you opponent is picky.

FOG units (BattleGroups) seem to vary from 2 to 12 stands with no odd numbers (I think there may be exceptions in some lists), so you'll need more stands. I suspect you'd need about 2000 points worth of WMA stands to flesh out an 800 point FOG army with the correct BattleGroup sizes.

:)

But you managed the more thorough answer, Steve!

There is the possibility of 9 stand BGs in FoG, but they are rare.

Thanks for the swift and helpful responses. So aside from the shock/phalanx basing for Warmaster, which I'd already figured would be an issue, it would seem to be okay to use Warmaster basing for FoG?

I don't have a problem with the larger battlegroups, since in most cases I expect it will just be a matter of recombining Warmaster Units to suit. I didn't realise that generals in FoG need their own 40mm bases though – from reading the reviews, it seemed as though they were free-floating like in Warmaster as opposed to fixed in troop bases like DBx (or maybe I'm getting confused).

FoG generals can move independently but should be in base to base contact with a battlegroup when they join it. A lot of players are just using existing DBM general bases the same size as cavalry most of the time but the rules allow for up to 40mm (60mm for 25/8mm) square bases for generals and there is a tiny advantage to doing this as it makes a slight increase in the command radius of the general.

That said at the weekend one of the armies we fought against had generals on round bases and it really wasn't a problem.

I bought FOG this weekend, after having played WMA for a year or two, and rebasing was one of my biggest concerns also. The only thing that's required is that your bases have a 40mm frontage. In Appendix 1, there is a chart showing the base depth for the various troop types, but right after that is a paragraph that explicitly says you don't need to worry about the depth if your army is already based for a different rule set. For my shock-based troops, I'm just going to push two stands together to make one 40mm x 40mm unit.

FoG has generated a lot of buzz at my wargaming club and the rules just showed up (and immediately sold out) at our FLGS. This is good because interest in Warmaster has really waned in the last few months and few folks seemed to be inclined towards DBx (we have one Warrior die-hard as well). It would be great if I could use my 15mm DBM (early Imperial Romans and Gauls)and 10mm WMA (Early Imperial Romans and Indians) armies to play FoG and it seems that it is very possible to do so. Sadly, I was slow getting to GreatHall Games, so I will wait for the re-order to pick up my copy of FoG.
