RECENT BATTLE REPORTS
Jeff Ruszczyk

Friendly with my Ostrogothic/Gepid supported Huns versus Knights of St. John...we did a few rules wrong, as it had been several weeks since my last game, but we called it a draw after 3 hours. Next time Attila will guard the baggage with the Gepid Wb(S)... [3 Nov 1999]

The last round of the BHGS competition in Leeds. Due to a lot of bad luck and some poor play I was in last place going into the last round. I was using a Hindu Indian army designed to beat the kinght armies that I expected to be there. Up till this point I had not me a knight army, this tine I did and the Feudal Spanish had no chance and what little they had was not helped by a late arriving flank march. The Hindu Indiand won 10-0 with the loss of 2 and a half elements [25 Sep 1999]

Michael Walsh

DBM Ch'in vs Indians at 400pts, Ch'in spear centre rolled over the Indian centre of Bows and Elephants into the Indian camp whilst Chariots and cavalry of both sides skirmished indecisively. [17 Sep 1999]

Michael Frang

Two or three times a year before an upcoming convention the club usually gathers so that all those going will get a little 'Armati' practice for the tournament. Last time for practice, I managed to draw 'Calculating George' and his Alexandrian army. My army of choice was a successor, Pyrrhic. So far riding on a string of victories. This time, however, I fell victim to the Alexander's brilliance, i.e. the initiative bonus, and a dismal showing on the part of my "elite 5 cav." But, never fear, I thought to myself - we'll just call up Doug and thrash those Romans again! Aye, that's the spirit! [17 Jun 1999]

Kevin Donovan

Malaccan infantry defated Assyrian chariots and veteran infantry while the Malaccan archers and elephants held off and then defeated Assyrian cavalry and light infantry. [23 May 1999]

Donald Effinger

We played 2000 pts. Warhammer Anients battle, Carthagian vs. Alexander. [14 May 1999]

The last game I played was Sung Chinese against Burmese. I lost right from the set up. I focused to much on my opponents elephants and went for the large units of 48 figures. I did not have a long enough line to protect my flanks appropriatly and was quickly obliterated. [30 Apr 99]

In our local tournament I deployed Graeco-Bacttrian facing Yuan Chinese. I lost after 3,5 hours. My opponent was superior with experience of years. But I went good too. I wanted to get 1/2 element from his C-in-C command or 1 element from his second command to get the victory. [21 Apr 99]

John P. Winkler

The last game wasn't Entirely Historical. I pitted my Late Roman Army (15mm) against my friend's, Rick's, Early Imperial Roman Army. We played using Warhammer Ancients Battles. It looked as if I might have an easy victory (with the use of Hun allies; they are great in this set) until one of my legions failed moral. At that point most of my army followed. [4 Apr 99]

Terry Gore

Fought against Gary Comardo's superbly painted Gauls, I used Caesarian Romans with supporting ranks to wear the Gauls down before dealing with them. As predicted, the Gauls swarmed all over the Roman vanguard, but were unable to break any of the Roman units. The Gallic cavalry did have some success against the Roman horse, but the hardy Roman infantry in reserve had by then closed upon the Gauls and beat them soundly.

In AW, you must tire (disorder) the legionnnaires before simply charging in. A good game and an historical outcome. [4 Apr 99]

Justin Taylor

Using Warhammer Ancient Battles at club. Imperial Romans vs Byzantine. [3 Apr 99]

last campaign using avalon hill's 'hannibal' with armati rules and 4-5 players. generated 6-8 games [2 Apr 99]

DBM - 400AP - My Patrician Romans versus Tang Chinese. I over-committed my Fast Knights, trapping my Hunnic allies and messing up my own command and control. This lead to a disappointing 10-0 loss. My PRs are now hold a 1-1 record in this incarnation.

I am familiar with a number of rules sets - and am not particularly fond of any. The best - with reservations - is DBA. The worst are Tactica and the pre-DBA WRG offerings. Right now, I am in the process of analyzing GLUTTER OF RAVENS and MIGHT OF ARMS. [31 Mar 99]

persian vs indian. that persian 'spara' formation is formidable! a few people (including jervis) have said they think elephants are too powerful, i disagree my ellies suufer badly from massed bow fire and tend too run, sorry 'stampede' off the table carrying my boss with them argh! [31 Mar 99]

Bill MacGillivray

Polybian Roman (with celtiberian allies) against Later Selucid. DBM A perfect ambush broke my opponents mobile command. His scythed chariots got nowhere against the celtiberian caetrati. A fight for the wood in the centre was bloody and inconclusive (but almost cost me a command).

When we ran out of time, his C-in-C was attempting to take on an entire command almost single handed. A few more turns would probably have resulted in a 9-1 victory. [31 Mar 99]

Sean Britt

DBM tourney in Hattisburg, MS. Played as a alternate with Marian Romans. Two 9-1 victorys vs Teutionic and Latter Assyrians. The dice were on my side in both games as my Auxila (S) killed 5 stands of Knights (S)for the day. Unbelievable! [30 Mar 99]
