HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN TERRAIN:
Chain-Link Fence

Era Contemporary/Futuristic
Scale 25mm
Difficulty Moderate
Materials
  • screen
  • silver metal tubing (sug. 1/8" diam.)
  • card
  • tacky-glue
  • scissors
  • hacksaw
  • (Super glue and fine wire optional)

This is how I build lengths of Chain-link (or Hurricane) fencing for WH40K.

  1. Cut a card base. I usually make them in 4" to 6" sections. The strip should be 1/2" wide and you can round or mitre the ends to suit your style.
  2. Cut the posts from the metal tubing. This requires a good saw (I usually use a hacksaw, it's what it's made for...). Cut sections an inch tall each. The number is a matter of taste. I tend to use three on a 4" base, and four on a 6".
  3. Mount the posts on the card base (now's where careful sawing really counts). Exact measurement isn't vital. You can eye-ball them along the card. Just make sure there's one at either end and then fill the middle at attractive distances. To set them, drop a nice glob of tacky-glue on the intended spot and then stick the tube in. You'll want to hold the tube in place untill the glue starts to take, but then just let it dry.
  4. After the posts are dried in place you can get to the screen. Use an old pair of scissors you don't care about, especially if you're using metal screen (I suggest the nylon). Cut the screen to fit the span of the posts. Glue it on (either by running a line of tacky- or super-glue down the posts and then pushing it into place.) Once it dries, clean up the ends and edges with some small scissors.
  5. The piece can be painted now, or you can add extra details such as:
    • wire ties between the posts and the screen (jeweler's wire works best for this)
    • heavy-gauge wire cross-bars diagonally between posts
    • caps on the tops of the posts
    • spiral/razor wire accross the tops
  6. Paint and/or decorate the base, The fence itself probably doesn't need painting (if you use all silver supplies anyway.)
