When I was just looking at the pictures of those who were playing, I was thinking 'it's a boring game'. When I played the game, it was fun.

@Julia: Well, you've learned the most essential lesson of gaming – it's always more interesting to play a game than to watch one.

That said, if you really want some secondhand experience with the various games that are out there, just poke around Youtube for video reviews and battle reports for whatever system you're interested in. Even if you don't play the game or know the rules yourself, a good commentator's analysis of how the game plays out can really help to familiarize you with a system. There are entire channels devoted to this hobby, enough to keep you busy for years. For ex, a few favorites:

I agree.
I find games I am not playing in as exciting as watching paint dry.
AARs bore me to tears too.
It's always better to be playing.

is that a criticism of my high standards of generalship? grin

(Lesson One: Don't put wimpy units at the ends of your battlelines.)
(Lesson Two: Don't get flanked.)
(Lesson Three: Roll higher!)

I like that Bill got "p0wned" on dice rolling, straight out of the chute! thumbs up

Just a heads up, when playing 1st edition Mighty Armies you do not roll initiative at the start of each turn. Player 1 is player 1 and player 2 is player 2 the whole game…. If your gonna teach rules you need to KNOW the rules :-)

I make these mistakes all the time even for rules I write myself.

skinkmasterreturns31 Aug 2013 5:43 a.m. PST

Julia needs to learn to paint, too.:)

I see you are correct. Oh well…

Julia needs to learn to paint, too. :)

Paints and minis will be in her possession soon!

Well Bill, you've interested a new person to gaming, Kudos!!

Julia, have fun with playing, watching can be boring.

Bill- Send me her email and I'll get some PDFs out to her :)

This odd unfolding story is probably the most unique way of entering the hobby I've ever heard of, but it seems successful so far.

mrplant01 Sep 2013 2:56 p.m. PST

I don't think I have seen anything quite like this before.

ancientsgamer02 Sep 2013 9:09 a.m. PST

Always let the new player win, so they come back again. At least I tell myself this when I get trounced by beginner's luck. Oh, and you did this to yourself, Bill, I mean seriously rolling against your own troops? tsk, tsk.

Next time let her roll her own from her side since you have video chat anyway. Or maybe not, you will outroll you again!

Julia may start a trend in the Philippines you know, young women playing 'manly' games and all (at least this is what I tell myself when playing with toy soldiers in my 40s… LOL)

She'll have her own dice soon!

That'll learn' ya to take on the young-uns!

Congrats Julia – and to our esteemed leader, I can only say that this is pretty much what happens to me every time I game with the Little Prince

DBA Online might be a good alternative.

You might also consider trying Mighty Army Ancients so that you don't have to deal with magic.

I agree with Julia on proper rolling of dice. I can't stand the palm and flip method. Rolling means rolling.

Personal logo Editor in Chief Bill The Editor of TMP Fezian11 Sep 2013 2:42 p.m. PST

It's not intentional… just that sometimes, I can't get the dice to roll! grin

TheBeast Supporting Member of TMP24 Nov 2013 3:21 p.m. PST

Not to worry; obviously, as 'poker' was one of her games, the mechanics are particularly important.

It's a fun game to play, especially if you are winning.

Quite true, of course. However, it's a true gamer that can lose, and still sing the praises of a hard-fought battle.

We've all been defeated by loopy rules or consistently bad rolls, and I will wail and gnash teeth, but to see a gleam of satisfaction in a player's eyes in spite watching 'best laid schemes … gang aft a'gley' is truly inspirational.

Sort of like 'a bad day fishing…'

And I hate to fish. ;->=

Ok Julia/Bill..next time I am in Manila I will challenge Julia to a game..the only thing is she has to have the figures and terrain as I only come with a small backpack..hmm.. could be the way to get my fiance to play as well! Yeah, that's the ticket! And my son is supposed to visit from doing maneuvers in Korea, so should be a good game. See you in June Julia…maybe.. lol..

Uparmored23 May 2020 3:58 a.m. PST
