It's looking already as if we've all got seven years older !

Mute Bystander31 Aug 2015 3:11 a.m. PST

Nice to know so many of you are so much younger than I am…

It appears that I'm the first to admit to the 70s although someone is 'really, really old' so is much older than me.

I'm apparently in that generation. I feel so young!

As of 8:25 am EST, those who think the hobby is graying out seem to be right. However, it's possible TMP members have never been a representative sample of wargamers.

Furthermore, I still am aware of vendors and shopkeeps who make a living, in part, by selling miniature gaming figures that have never heard of TMP!

The reason I know so much about the Seven Years War is because I was there.

I still feel like a 20 yr old.
Maybe Smokey can find me one who is willing!

Decades of gaming and I still roll bad….statistically I should be in Vegas constantly winning at the crap table.

That poll certainly looks like the crowd I saw in WSS' Historicon video…

I have never told any of my gaming figures about TMP… evil grin

I suspect the hobby is in a state of "perpetual graying," as the expense and time requirements kind of slim down the crowd for those in the younger ages, due either to income, family commitments (kids take time) or both (and kids take even more money). So what you have is the early twenties hobbyist who spends on gaming until dating or marriage takes over, and then comes back to the hobby in his 40s and 50s as those obligations (and the finances) tend to loosen up again. So the hobby is always made up of (primarily) men who are entering or in the "gray years."

Interesting I made my selection and it came up with my correct age.

Buff Orpington31 Aug 2015 12:49 p.m. PST

I'm hoping the poll draws a lot more people in their 70s and over otherwise I may not make the cut next time we ask this question.

All this will tell us are the ages of those who are on TMP and specifically those who responded to this poll.

Prehistoric, by some measures.

Mute Bystander31 Aug 2015 3:50 p.m. PST

Parzival,

I have never stopped spending just reducing the cash flow at times.

Yesthatphil31 Aug 2015 5:40 p.m. PST

I was first polled 30 years ago … was bang on average age and looks like I still might be …

But as I always point out … given that the median age in most western societies is late 30s to mid 40s one would expect any such graph to peak in the 30 to 60 range just as this one does.

If the picture is greying, it is only maybe 10 years more grey than 'normal' …

Man, we're all gonna be dead soon and there's no one to take our places…

mandt231 Aug 2015 10:18 p.m. PST

Wow, dominated by those between 40 and 60-ish. Very few older, and very few younger.

Ironwolf01 Sep 2015 4:07 a.m. PST

I think you have to consider some of the possible reasons on the age of gamers. Younger gamers have limited funds for the hobby. Plus they have other hobbies or young families that take up a lot of their time.

The middle age gamers have extra funds for the hobby and their children are older, so they have extra time for the hobby.

The older gamers are starting to see more restrictive income after retirement or medical issues start cropping up that cost more.

Just my two cents on the topic.

I have a feeling there's a hip and trendy wargaming site out there where the young gamers go….

…I just don't know where it is. wink

Rrobbyrobot01 Sep 2015 5:50 a.m. PST

How old am I? Some might say, too…

MarescialloDiCampo01 Sep 2015 6:53 a.m. PST

Just buy lots of unpainted figures and paint them when as Ironwolf says: more restrictive income after retirement or medical issues start cropping up that cost more.

When I was younger, there seemed to be many minis gamers that were my contemporaries. Now that I'm older, I don't see as many of that age bracket. At least, not in the historical minis areas. But maybe they're all over at the other store playing with those fantasy and sci-fi toys.

"Man, we're all gonna be dead soon and there's no one to take our places…" --- I hope not! Who am I going to leave all my figures to? Or sell them to? Wak!!

Scorpio05 Sep 2015 11:37 a.m. PST

Yeah, the non-TMP and non-historicals crowds would definitely poll younger, for sure.
