To me Stalin and Hitler are close, but Stalin pretty much concentrated on killing his own people so I gave Hitler the nod

I don't think that any of these qualify as scoundrel. They are more in the evil category.

I agree with Jeff. The word "scoundrel" sometimes has a comic ring to it. The finalists are just plain evil.
My choices have long been eliminated.

Rasputin is the closest to a "scoundrel," and it's iffy whether it applies or not.
But I concur on the others— they are evil, not "scoundrels."

Words have meanings, y'all. These are not examples of what "scoundrel" means, or for that matter, connotes.

I am with Parzival. I could have gone with Talleyrand

I think what we've established here is that "scoundrel" means different things to different people.

… and some of those people are wrong.

USAFpilot02 Aug 2021 12:47 p.m. PST

Yes, this seems to be a poll of who is the most "evil" and not "scoundrel". We seem to live in a time when nuisance is lost on many people and everything becomes binary of "good" or "bad". If something is classed in the good category than it can have no fault, and likewise if something or someone is classified as bad than they can have no redeeming values. Everything nowadays is politicized into two separate camps unfortunately.

Speculus02 Aug 2021 2:53 p.m. PST

I agree that we have nominated evil people, not scoundrels:

SCOUNDREL: a dishonest or unscrupulous person; a rogue:

With that definition, Talleyrand gets my vote too.

Florida Tory02 Aug 2021 4:37 p.m. PST

Clearly it's Talleyrand.

Shagnasty Supporting Member of TMP03 Aug 2021 7:22 a.m. PST

I agree with the above as to the meaning of scoundrel. Most of the finalists are in a class of degeneracy far beyond "scoundrel."

My opinion scoundrel is more a Tallyrand type character than a Joe Stalin. There is just a back stabbing turncoat than a flat out evil person.

By the results of this poll, not everyone here understands the definition of a scoundrel. A scoundrel is a dishonest or unscrupulous person or a rogue. Hitler and Stalin do not fit the category at all. They are guilty of crimes against humanity and are well beyond the label Scoundrel. Of those listed only Rasputin comes closest.

I agree that Talleyrand would be one. Others,

Citizen Genęt
Charles Allen, aka: Big Time Charlie
Philip Arnold
Samuel Bennett
Lou "The Fixer" Blonger
James Joshua Dolan
Joseph "Yellow Kid" Weil
Bill Miner

Fictional characters might include,

The Count of Monte Cristo
Tom Jones
