Eureka actually has armed divers in their range:

Voted yes, but mostly because the idea sounds really cool and I *might* pick up a few, not because I'm planning a huge scuba-diver army.

And I would be expecting swimming figures to face off against terrors from the deep such as sharks, pleisosaurs and cthulhuoid monsters.

Warbeads05 Feb 2009 4:20 a.m. PST

This might tempt me into getting some aquatic skirmisher figures. Hmmm, what rules?

Gracias,

Glenn

ive been eyeing some plastic scuba guys for some time now. They are alot larger than 28mm though so Id have to get creative with their support gear.

nazrat05 Feb 2009 7:17 a.m. PST

I've seen some really neat games being played at cons with scuba diver and lots of sea life and such, and I'd play in an instant. But I have zero interest in owning such models.

Ditto. I'd play, but not buy.
Sorry.

jpattern205 Feb 2009 10:12 a.m. PST

Absolutely, positively yes, as long as they look like '60s scuba divers and have minimal kit. Wetsuit, dive belt, watch, knife strapped to leg, flippers, mask, tanks and mouthpiece. Swimming (horizontal) and floating (vertical) poses, open-handed to take various weapons. Also a few dry land poses, mask and tanks optional, open-handed to take various weapons. 1 or 2 female divers. Optional tow sleds would be a definite plus. I'd buy at least 2 dozen divers, probably more.

Think Thunderball: picture

Or Jonny Quest: picture

The Eureka frogmen have *way* too much kit for my tastes/needs.

The plastic grocery store scuba guys are the same size as army men (54mm-ish), one can find toy boats, zodiacs, and chariot-style minisubs with them.

I would buy 28mm figures in spite of my large-ish (about 100) plastic collection just so I could do underwater and surface action in the same scale.

I would buy at least a dozen or so on a side, you do want a lot for the climactic battle scene, or if you're hunting giant squid…

As for rules – I have used Blood and Swash/Thunder and Plunder for club and convention games, and GASLIGHT would work just as well. You might also consider adapting one of the pulp games like .45 Adventure or Howard Whitehouses' pulp rules.

I'm currently working on rules using the TwoHourWargames mechanics, tentatively entitled "Undersea Kingdom," that would cover vsf/pulp/modern undersea combat, including SCUBA, Hard Hat diving, Captain Nemo, and so on.

Alxbates05 Feb 2009 10:48 a.m. PST

Nope, I wouldn't buy them. Not my thing.

Top Gun Ace05 Feb 2009 11:21 a.m. PST

Yes, I would love to see some released.

Basic scuba kit, as mentioned above. Some with single, and some with twin tanks for variety. Some with rebreathers, and more modern kit would be nice as well.

Tow-sleds too, especially ones armed with spearguns, NEWT suits, and hard-hat divers too. The latter two can be used for deep operations, or for scenarios where an oil rig or deep diving sub stuck on the bottom of the sea needs to be defended, or repaired.

Women in bikinis, just because…..

A few divers without tanks would be nice too (mask, fins, snorkels, and weapons, or demo charge/limpet mines), for historical attacks on vessels at anchor, shallow water battles, and/or covert insertion work. In addition to the British diver attacks on the Tirpitz, in their Chariots, the Italian swimmers were quite successful in attacking vessels in port, using limpet mines. Of course, the Japanese used mini-subs for attacks on vessels in port too. All of these would be great inspiration for some decent WWII games.

Given the nature of modern warfare, the use of divers during the Iran-Iraq War by Iran, the use of SEALS during Panama, and later wars, combat swimmers are a much neglected miniatures option for today's wargamers.

Top Gun Ace05 Feb 2009 11:21 a.m. PST

I'd like to see them in 15mm scale as well.

I wish someone would pick up the Goblintooth line of minis/molds. I have never seen them, but they sounded nice from the descriptions. They even had diver towing vehicles, like from the Thunderball movie.

Anyone have any photos of them, and/or links to photos they can share?

I have the rules tucked away somewhere, but sadly, not minis to go with them.

Falling Airborne05 Feb 2009 6:40 p.m. PST

I'd buy some frogmen. I'd also like to see some SEALs in wetsuits with weapons at the ready, like they just came off the beach and are assaulting the bad guy's mansion.

zapper05 Feb 2009 8:03 p.m. PST

I have the Eureka set already and really dig them. They're pretty darn good if you you're looking for modern divers I highly recommend them.

I've looked for something to use for divers with a homemade Sealab 2021 game for a couple of years and those are as close as I've been able to come. It's a little off the subject, but still fairly modern, but I'd love to see some divers modeled along the Sealab line, or like the ones Shaggy and Scoob used in the Captain Cutler(?) episode. (At least that's the episode I think they wore the dive suits.)

RavenscraftCybernetics06 Feb 2009 9:22 a.m. PST

Id be tempted by the Eureka guys but they have no flippers.
You just cant be called a frogman without flippers.

Riverbluff Wargames06 Feb 2009 11:59 a.m. PST

I would love to see some available and if I had the extra funds right now I would have them done myself and put them on the market.

Riverbluff Wargames06 Feb 2009 12:24 p.m. PST

I just submitted the idea to Wargames Factory.

Yes, I'd buy some--at least a pack or two of whatever was produced, if not to heavily equipped.

I would also want free divers with fins, weight belts, and old round masks. Best of all though, for my own rules projects, free divers with goggles in swimsuits/lava-lavas/sarongs/etc for South Seas type pearl or treasure diving scenarios.

Any divers should be capable of mounting on a steel pin (at the waist?) to represent horizontal movement in a 3D environment. I'm working on sunken wrecks for "Mean Sets," and these figures especially would be invaluable!

If Wargames Factory acknowledges Riverbluff's suggestion, let's all get together in a thread, decide on the figure types to go in one set, and then start pledging sprues.

I'm game!

The Eureka divers look nice, but they need some swimming ones, and some seated ones for the ride in to the beachhead in the inflatable boat. A few prone, or crawling figures, and some running/skirmishing would be nice as well.

These would be great for modern pirate actions, where the troops try to take back a vessel, or land on a beach to destroy the bad guys' boats.

Would love to see them, and others done in 15mm scale.

For futuristic games, some of the GZG Sci-Fi astronauts in vacc suits might work for divers – they do light and heavy versions of them. The floating ones would be best, since you could just add swim fins to them.

Riverbluff Wargames07 Feb 2009 1:53 p.m. PST

Ya know, after re-reading Shelldrakes comments in the poll discription, it may be better to put this in the Eureka 100 club. Eureka only needs orders for 150 figures to get them done as compared to the 1000 sprues needed for Wargames Factory. We would be more likely to see the figs. I guess the trade off would be that it would be less likely to get extra bits for conversion purposes.

shelldrake08 Feb 2009 11:15 p.m. PST

The scuba divers I am thinking of are for underwater games (as opposed to frog men on land like the Eureka modern frogmen) – such as underwater battles as seen in 007 movies or underwater treasure hunts as mentioned above.

The packs of large plastic divers are ok, but not to the scale I want, nor with the equipment.

Riverbluff Wargames09 Feb 2009 7:19 a.m. PST

Yea, that is what I put in for Wargames Factory. I'm wanting the same thing.
