All deserving of the grand prize.
But chose Black Powder.

"Rulesets I don't like that I don't like other people liking".
This is ridiculous.

That sums up "overrated" AND "underrated" perfectly. 🤷
I'm just following the crowd, carrying my torch and pitchfork like a good little boy.

But chose Black Powder.

Have you ever played it?

Personal logo John the OFM Supporting Member of TMP29 May 2026 10:14 a.m. PST

A few times. I didn't care for the mechanics that pretend to be clever but just slowed things down.
I feel no need to elaborate further.
This Poll, like all of them, is just about my opinion. I don't need to justify an opinion.

By the way, I have played the others. But I really dislike rules that feel the need to put out new "Editions" whenever the Market dictates.

I feel it's bad to vilify Warhammer 40k and the other games workshop games, yes many never played them (the oldest in our community) but for many, possibly most who have come to the hobby since the mid 1990's games workshop and the Warhammer games have been the gateway. Many of us grow beyond them and start to look at them as simplistic, market driven products but they have, do and will continue to feed people into what we do as players see the other opportunities out there we should welcome them not attack something that for many will remain a memory of happy days.

Oh, it's very easy to vilify them. And yes I have played them. And then their merchandising "forced" them to come out with new editions that invalidated what I had purchased and painted.
My opinion, and I feel no need to justify it for the 23rd time.
Have a nice day.

"Warhammer games have been the gateway."

Gateway to where?

Over the years 40K and it's ilk has stolen players and wrecked clubs. One day you have a group of 20 players and the next your down to four. I don't get the attraction. Maybe because I didn't go that route. I was a historical gamer from the get-go. Who says I had to wait till I was 40 before I could play historical. I was 14.

SPI and AH was my gateway.

Have to say, like Old Contemptible, was gaming historically well before WarHammer 40K was a thing

SPI and AH was my gateway.

Ditto. Sure, I played with cowboys, dinosaurs and firemen, but that wasn't … organized?
Avalon Hill Gettysburg to start. Avalon Hill General. Driving (!) to a hobby shop with job money (!) to buy Bulge. No need for "Battle of the …" Avalon Hill was the only Bulge.
Then driving from Penn State to Altoona to play the legendary plexiglass Trafalgar, and then on to Joisey to play a weekend gaming get together. Not a convention. Just a bunch of strangers.
I played Wurtemburgers. I had never even heard of Wurtemburg. I had about those mysterious miniatures from Strategy and Tactics.
It was downhill from there.

I got involved with Warhammer before they got … annoying. Getting my entire Forest Goblin army made … redundant? "Unofficial"? Wiped out by not being in that stupid "codex" turned me off. That was before the hype.

My gateway was Column Line and Square with Scruby figures. I only played GW stuff when I went to work for a college and met the students there who played. After a few years and a new job, I sold most of my stuff. (That was 2-5th edition now they are starting 11th.)

Hordes of the Things would have been my choice.

I do often wonder if very first Napoleonic rules llayed was Column, Line and Square.
Never played Blackpowder rules, follow Napoleonic War gamer on YouTube who does, but a few Napoleonic players at conventions say stay away.
