I will concede the gladiatorial arena as genre-specific terrain useful across the genres described. I will go further, though: what we need is a smallish and slightly run-down arena, which breaks down into four or eight pieces for storage. To go with that, we need three arena floors--chess, jetan and sand. Which is a useful insight, since I've been stacking up styrofoam toward my own arena. |

Jetan? Martian chess? Or "durable twilled cotton cloth used especially for sportswear and work clothes. a durable twilled cotton cloth used especially for sportswear and work clothes"? Might add asphalt, too. |

Of course "Martian chess." Am I speaking to the only wargamer of more or less my generation who never read Chessmen of Mars? But you need a 10x10 board in black and orange squares instead of a chess 8x8. And gladiators won't fight on asphalt. Union rules. |

And gladiators won't fight on asphalt. Union rules. Because they might get nasty scrapes on their knees. |
