Sci-Fi. When you get to time travel, all the historical periods are included. Then throw in alternate universes, with or without goatees.

I voted "This is Ridiculous" because it's a dumb premise.

I like skirm8sh and RPG's period. And I didn't see a period i would dislike. Basically, if I am playing I don't really care much what I am playing.

I don't really see the Wild West as anything other than a skirmish. I know there were some battles, but it seems much more suited to skirmish than anything else.

I have grown tired of skirmish gaming. I don't see the point anymore. It doesn't matter what period the figures are from, it's just the same rules and the only difference are the figures. Doesn't exactly excite my inner Historian. Locally their using Samurai rules to do Renaissance skirmish.

I know the feeling OC. But let's be fair: there are a number of historical incidents--some of them important--at the skirmish game level. Think assasinations, ambushes, captures of key personnel, some demolitions, and captures of critical equipment.

And they're easier to fit on a table and play in an evening than D-Day.

Give me big battalions and regiments. I want big games doing historical battles and/or period correct battles. I have a big table and we play all day. I don't want to spend a turn loading my musket. I don't want to roll to activate my idiot officer. I don't want to search my cards to see if my idiot officer knows what he is doing. A big game once or twice a month is plenty for me as I need time putting the scenario together, something I enjoy doing. I'd rather be a General than a Lieutenant.

Besides, I suck at it. That's my rant, you can remove yourself from my lawn at your convivence.

I like big miniatures games, as well. I wrote an Army Men rules set which is likely closer to a skirmish game than a mass battles game, but I can't help myself -- I love to run the biggest games I possibly can with them. In my last game, the table setup was 12 feet wide by 30 feet long, with 54mm Army Men figures! It was the greatest, largest, miniatures game I have ever played. We played it over two days, for around six hours each day. It was GLORIOUSLY FUN!

I have been prepping a follow-up game set within a city, ever since. I need to run that sooner, rather than later. It has been percolating for far too many years. Cheers!

OC, "I'd rather be a general than a lieutenant" is a perfectly valid reason for disliking skirmish games. But you do realize, don't you, that not all skirmish games involve reloading times, and neither command ratings nor activation rolls are limited to them?

When you stick to the stuff which is always and uniquely true of the object of your wrath, your target has a worse save.

Sgt Slag – Sounds like great fun. We did something similar where we replayed the Battle of Bunker Hill from a single companies perspective.

Using 40mm miniatures we had one British company numbering 36 miniatures with command charging uphill against a rail fence defended by 24 rebels. Rebels had only 3 shots each.

We had a great time with it.
